3. Common Procedures • Homework • Complete assignments in pencil. • The student’s handbook and a novel must be carried at all times. • Making up work after absences – • Students are responsible for completing any missed assignments or class work.

Student assistance program (SAP) • Seeks to identify at-risk students who are having problems in school and to refer them for help. • Strictly confidential • Referrals are made by administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and students. • District SAP Coordinator – Mrs. Michelle Zawillazamic@wilsonsd.org

7. 6th Grade Field trips • Fall - Camp Swatara White Team September 23-25 Red Team September 25-27 Reminder – Parents should pick up child at 11:30 AM on the day the students return from camp. Walkers may walk home with their parents’ permission. • Spring – Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA Date: May 14 or May 15, 2014

8. More Camp Swatara information • Drop-off times for camping gear will be held the night before your child leaves for camp. Parents may drop off their child’s possessions in the back of the Southern Middle School building in the auxiliary gym. Look for the back entrance with a ramp. • Drop-off dates and times: • White Team – Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 8:00-9:00 PM • Red Team – Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 from 8:00-9:00 PM • Medication – Medication for your child MUST be dropped off by a parent the morning your child leaves for camp. All medication should be in the original containers. Medications may be dropped off between 6:45 AM – 7:30 AM on the day your child leaves for camp.

SLC – Student led conferences New this year! • Purpose: • Students accept responsibility for learning and become more aware of the learning process. • Students report academic growth to parents and progress toward becoming life-long learners • Increase parent participation in conferences • Move students toward goal of being life-long learners • CONFERENCES WILL BE HELD IN MID-JANUARY – MORE INFORMATION WILL BE FORTHCOMING

12. Family & Consumer Sciences – Mrs. Wolf • Understanding the familywill help students identify roles and duties, cope with changes and build stronger relationships with family members. • In the babysitting unit we will help students become better babysitters by discussing stages of child development, babysitting safety strategies and the responsibilities of babysitting. • The foods unit is an introduction to cooking and nutrition where students will learn beginning cooking skills including kitchen safety and sanitation, measuring, and cooking terminology. The students will apply their skills and knowledge through foods lab experiences in class.

13. Web 2.0 Career Concepts – Mrs. Szczepkowski • In the Computer Applications quintile, students will cover Microsoft Office, Desktop Publishing, Google Apps, Internet Safety, Social Networking Etiquette, and an Introduction to Web 2.0 tools!  • Projects will include: • “All About Me” Newsletter • Word Task Summative Assessment • Professional Letter to College • Spreadsheet Task • Multimedia PowerPoint Summative Assessment • Online Safety Game

14. Art – MrS. Jones • In 6thgrade Art: Students will be building skills and using inventive ideas to produce works of art. We will start the quint by making a portfolio and an art journal which will be used throughout the 7 weeks of art. The portfolio is an on-going project that is due the last week of the quint. Other projects include 2D and 3D artworks such as painting, drawing, and working with clay. • Feel free to visit my website for more information on projects, grades, and the upcoming Spring art show.

15. Tech Ed – Mr. Luft • Gateway to Technology (GTT) is a new curriculum that is aligned with the Pennsylvania Science & Technology Standards.  GTT is comprised of 6 independent exploratory units that are designed to challenge and engage the students.  • The 6 units of exploration are: • Science of Technology • Automation & Robotics • Magic of Electrons • Design and Modeling • Flight and Space • Energy and the Environment

16. Wellness – Mr. Brubaker, Mrs. Worrell and Mrs. Underwood • Wellness is a combination of Health and Physical Education. • Students will be graded each class based on their preparation, effort, attitude, respect, and knowledge.  The rubric for this is on our website and the class guidelines. • Uniform is a white shirt, red athletic shorts, socks, and sneakers • Students are given a lock and locker to use.  $3 to replace a lost lock. • A parent note is required to miss one class.  If more than two classes are missed, then a doctor’s note is needed. • ALL of this information is on our class guidelines, which is located on each one of our websites.
