Southeast Asian Nations Gain Independence • What were the goals of the Philippines immediately following WWII? • To rebuild the economy; restore the capital of Manila • What postwar issues caused conflict between the US & Philippines? • US presence on military bases in the Philippines; Filipinos saw it as US imperialism • What affect did Ferdinand Marco’s rule have on the Philippines? • He stole millions from the public treasury; imposed martial law to get around constitutional limits on years served in office • How did Corazon Aquino come into office? • Her husband was assassinated so she ran against Marcos who declared himself winner, but public outcry forced him into exile and Aquino took office. • How have rebels’ terrorist tactics affected life in the Philippines? • Launched an armed conflict against the gov’t; used kidnapping & murder to try to achieve their goals • What events kept Burma from gaining independence? • Ongoing conflict between repressive gov’ts & pro-democracy forces and between Commies & ethnic minorities • How did Singapore become such a prosperous nation? • It has one of the world’s busiest ports and has become a trade and banking center • How did Indonesia achieve independence? • Sukarno proclaimed its independence and declared himself president; Dutch tried to regain control but granted independence in 1949
