Flag • Three equal vertical bands in green, white, green • The green stands for Nigeria’s forests and agriculture • The white stands for the River Niger, unity and peace • Adopted on October 1, 1960
Coat of arms • Nigeria’s coat of arms is a black shield with 3 white lines that look like a Y • Represent the 3 rivers that run thru Nigeria • Black shield represents good earth • Also has two white horses on each side • Represent dignity • Also has a red eagle on top of shield • Represents strength • There is also a yellow band, and flowers under the shield • The band represents rich agriculture, and the flowers are the national flower of Nigeria
Technology • Nigeria is a third world country • Though has 8 million people using the Internet • Nigeria has 1.688 million telephone lines in use • Nigeria has 32.322 million people using cellular devices
Economy • Major product is oil and natural gas • They import some oil machinery, chemicals, transportation, food and live animals • They export $61.81 billion worth of products
Government • Nigeria is a federal republic • Modeled after the United States • Nigeria has a president, a vice president, speaker of the house, senate president and a chief justice • They have a legislative, judicial, and an executive branches of government
Clothing • Women • Buba- loose neck blouse • Iro- bottom part of dress • Gele- head piece • Men • Buba- loose neck t-shirt • Sokota- is their pants • Fila- a round cap • Agbada- a festive t-shirt that they wear over the buba and sokota
Global Issues with Nigeria • Oil • Refugees from other countries. • They are already over populated with out the refugees
Nigeria’s health plan • Nigeria started the NHCP in 1992 • Stands for Nigeria Health Care Project • There primary objective is to supply health care facilities in rural Nigeria which currently poor or non-existent services.
History • Nigeria’s earliest settlers were there as early as 9000 BC. • In 1885, after the Napoleonic wars, Britain expanded trade with Nigeria, by 1900 it was under British control. • In October of 1960 got its independence. • In 1966 a group of army officers overthrew the NPC-NNDP government and assassinated the prime minister • In 1967, the Igbo people started a civil war, ended a year later, with the defeat of the Igbo people • At this time General Mohammed was the leader, Feb. 3, 1976 he was assassinated. • For 17 yrs. They tried different constitutions. • November 17, 1993, Sani Abacha took control, 5 years later he died of heart failure and General Abubakar took control • He turned the government over to civil rule.
Climate • Nigeria is a very hot place • There is very little difference between summer and winter • The seasons are defined as wet and dry season. • The wet season from April from October • The dry season is from November until March.
Agriculture • The climate allows people to grow s variety of crops • Some crops: • Sorghum • Yams • Cassavas • Cowpeas • Corn • Sweet potatoes • The north part of Nigeria is mostly savanna, and it is unable to grow crops
Living conditions • Nigeria is a third world country • Since it is a third world country, living conditions are poor. • One US $1 is equal to N=140 in Nigeria
Famous people from Nigeria • Michael Olowokandi • Famous NBA player • Born on April 3, 1975 • Led his college team to the NCAA tournament • Was drafted first overall in the 1998 NBA draft by the Los Angles Clippers • Is considered to be one of the biggest busts in NBA history
Sports • Nigeria’s most famous sport is football (soccer) • The Nigerian Super Eagles is the pride and joy of African soccer fans • Both youth and adult soccer teams won multiple national championships • Won gold medal in the 1996 Olympics
Land marks • There are many famous landmarks and parks • Most famous park is the Yankari National park. • Established in 1991 • Is rich in wildlife
Transportation • Nigeria has 70 Air ports • The most common way to travel is by the roads • Some paved and others not
Language • Most Nigerians speak more than one language • There are estimated to be at least 521 different languages in Nigeria • The most common languages are • Yoruba • Ibo • Hausa language • Kanuri • English is the official language of Nigeria
Ethnic Groups • There are more than 250 different ethnic groups • Each with different beliefs and customs than others • The three largest are Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo

Religion • There are four major religions in Nigeria • They are • Christianity • Islam • Orisha • Animism
