  1. Legacy of colonization Nigeria

  2. Nigeria – Divide and Rule • Divisions and conflicts between communities (often ethnic or religious groups) were deliberately intensified by European colonial powers. The borders and administrative units of the African colonies were designed so that different and sometimes hostile groups would be put together under the same jurisdiction.

  4. Nigeria’s History • Nigeria obtained independence from Great Britain in 1960. • As a result of ethnic and religious differences, Nigeria erupted into civil wars and military rule. • Military coups were frequent and left the nation with a difficult task of achieving stability. • The first democratic election took place in 1999. • Elections further entrenched the religious divisions as many northern states in Nigeria passed and imposed Sharia Law in 2000.

  5. Gentleman's Agreement • Previous to the election Nigeria had agreed to an informal and non-legally binding agreement known as a “gentleman’s agreement.” • The agreement was set to rotate the presidency between the North (Muslim) and South (Christian) every two years. • Goodluck Jonathan (a Christian Southerner) won the election, however, the announcement of the results was followed by violence in the northern stronghold of his main opponent, General MuhammaduBuhari.
