  2. Aboriginals • Aboriginal = native • original people of Australia • came from south-east Asia • lived in Australia at least 40 000 years • lived mainly by hunting and gathering Obr. 1

  3. Aboriginal art • a wide range of works • painting on leaves • wood and rock carving • bark, sand and dot painting • body and clothes decoration • dancing, singing • the art in connection with Dreamtime - Aboriginal mythology Obr.2 Obr.3

Early explorers • 1606 Dutch explorer Willem Jansz considered the land poor and useless • 1642 Abel Tasman discovered Tasmania, later New Zealand • 1688 English William Dampier as the first described fauna, flora and Aborigins • the inspiration for Gulliver's Travels • No one could see the right nature of the country

  5. James Cook • 1770 - arrived at the eastern coast • landed at Botany Bay • declared the area a British territory Obr.4

Convicts and Settlers • one of the reason for British settlement - establishment of penal colonies • overcrowded correctional facilities in Britain • since 1787 British convicts were transported to Australia • the first settlement was established by free settlers in 1788 → 26th January - Australia Day • the last convicts arrived in 1868

  7. Inland settlement • the growing population and settlement up to Great Dividing Range • expeditions to inland areas and their settlement • Aborigines were exposed to new living conditions and diseases • massive depopulation and extinction of some aboriginal tribes

  8. Gold Rush • broke out in 1951 in New South Wales • massive local and overseas immigration • gold rush spread to the south and north of Sydney and the colony of Victoria • later gold deposits also uncovered in other states • a long economical boom led to greater autonomy of Australia

  9. States and goverment • 1st January 1901 - Federal Constitution was proclaimed • Commonwealth of Australia • federal constitutional monarchy under a parliamentary democracy • since 1960 – civil rights for all Australians • since 1998 - 26th May - National Sorry Day • commemoration of mistreatment Aborigines
