Poetry terms. Useful words to use when talking about poetry!. Alliteration. The repetition of similar consonant sounds in a line. For example: ‘What would the world be?’ ‘The cat crept crazily..’. Assonance. Similar to alliteration – but with VOWEL sounds. For example:

  1. Poetry terms Useful words to use when talking about poetry!

  2. Alliteration The repetition of similar consonant sounds in a line. For example: ‘What would the world be?’ ‘The cat crept crazily..’

  3. Assonance Similar to alliteration – but with VOWEL sounds. For example: ‘Eyes wide, inside my mind’ ‘Only lonely moans, far away from home.’

  4. Caesura A break or pause in a line of a poem, often used to get the attention of the reader, or for dramatic effect. For example ‘How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.’

  5. Enjambment The opposite of caesura – when a line of a poem continues through to the next line. Used to indicate that the ‘thought’ is going on. For example: I think that I shall never see A poem as lovely as a tree.

  6. Onomatopoeia A word used to mimic a sound. For example: Buzz, Fizz, “The moan of doves in immemorial elms,/And murmuring of innumerable bees.” (the repeated ‘mmm’ sounds like murmuring!)
