  2. Life during the Civil War • What conditions did soldiers on both sides of the war face? • Why were conditions for southern soldiers harder than for northern soldiers? • How did the war affect the northern economy? • How did it affect the southern economy? • Who were copperheads? • What is the draft? Why did some people cause this a “rich man’s war but a poor man’s fight”? • What does it mean Lincoln suspended the “writ of habeas corpus” several times?

  3. After Antietam • McClellan was fired after pushing Lee out of Maryland – why? • What pressure was Burnside under? • Burnside’s plan • 1. CommunicationGeneral Burnside's troops reach the Rappahannock River to find that the pontoons they need to cross the river have not arrived. Poor communication and inclement weather have hampered the delivery. Burnside's men wait almost two weeks for the equipment to show up. The quick advance of Union troops on General Lee's unsuspecting army is an essential part of Burnside's strategy; the two-week delay gives the Confederate soldiers plenty of time to prepare for battle. • Show Burnside’s decision from “God’s and Generals”

  4. Fredericksburg

  5. Show Scenes 22 – 26 of “Gods and Generals”

  6. The Angel of Fredericksburg

  7. Fredericksburg results • Confederates suffered 5,300 causualties • 12,600 Federal soldiers killed, wounded, or missing, • almost two-thirds fell in front of the stone wall • Once again Lee has defeated a Union General who has 2 – 3 times his number • Burnside resigns – taking full blame for the defeat – He is replaced by Hooker.
