  2. What is it? • Created the territories ofKansa and Nebraskaand negated the Missouri Compromise allowing settlers in those territories todetermine by popular sovereignty if they would allow slavery.

  3. The Start • In the 1850’s settlers wanted to occupy the territories of Nebraska. Since it was an unorganized territory settlers would not settle because they could not claim the land. • Southern controlled Congress did not want another state above the 36,30 parallel where it would become another free state.

  4. The Compromise • To fix the problem Stephen Douglas proposed a new Southern state called Kansas. • The new act would allow states to vote on weather they wanted to hold slaves or not. • The bill passed in 1845

  5. Impact • The Whig party (one of the major parties) was split over the issue. • Southerners supported it and joined the Democratic party. They liked it because Missouri farmers could move into the territories. • The Northern side formed the Republican party. They were unhappy because the Missouri compromise was now void.

  6. Crisis becomes violent • Pro-slavery and anti slavery groups moved into Kansas. • In 1855 Kansas held elections. • Pro-slavery “Border Ruffians”voted illegally and elected a proslavery government. • Antislavery groups rejected proslavery laws • Gangs roomed the territory.
