  1. Run IIb Project Status Vivian O’Dell

  2. Run IIb Upgrade Project • Project Status Overview • Management/Schedule • AFEII-t review and management • Schedule • PPD reporting • Other Reviews • Installation review • BCP Review/Status • Cost • Current baseline cost including AFEII-t

  3. AFEII-t Review • Director’s review of the AFEII-t project occurred April 13-14 • See http://d0server1.fnal.gov/projects/run2b/Meetings/DirectorsReviews/AFEII_April_2005/Review_web.htm • Review covered physics case, technical progress during R&D and cost&schedule. • Written report by reviewers highlighted • Schedule risk • Urged to maximize management and reporting • Weekly reporting • Added production manager • Urged to prioritize specifications • We are doing this • Cost risk • Urged to mitigate risk of layout flaw of the TripT by adding an additional cycle of TripT production • Increased cost and pushed out schedule • Urged to gain schedule by using contigency to speed up procurements • We are doing this. Also planing to pay OT for AFEII-t board layout work. • The directorate has approved the AFEII project with the above caveats • We will be adding a L2 milestone via the PEP during the BCP (this is how DOE wanted it done)

  5. Project Schedule: Director’s Milestones Current best estimate for RunIIb installation readiness: 9/16/05 (Currently) driven by silicon L0 ready date

  6. Project Status/Reporting • Have started regular weekly meetings with Joel Butler and Greg Bock to report on the project • Format for weekly project reports has been proposed/discussed • Very informal reports with bad grammar and ??’s in it • Really meant to have informational content • Consists of milestone tables/projects plus some text to discuss issues and concerns • Also has some integration dates and progress since this feeds into installation understanding • Basically we report weekly on all milestones in the project as well as any concerns/resource needs/etc. • Includes Trigger, Online, Silicon and AFEII-t subprojects Example excerpt from a weekly report

  7. Installation Review • PPD organized a review of the D0 RunIIb installation schedule on June 3 • Review committee was charged with evaluating the D0 installation plan and advise PPD on its likelihood of success • This means commenting on both the proposed start date and duration of the installation • 5 reviewers scrutinized the D0 installation schedule • Gino Bolla, Doug Glenzinski, Steve Nahn, Ron Ray, Jeff Spalding • Conclusion: • D0 was unlikely to be ready for an Oct 3 startup date • Highly likely to be ready for Oct 31 start • (note this was D0’s first proposal for shutdown start date) • The committee felt more information was needed to comment strongly on duration date • Wanted to hear more details of the full installation job and not just the most delicate part of inserting L0 into the D0 detector • Wants D0 to work on compressing the schedule other than the delicate insertion part • The committee suggested another review around late July/early August would be useful • More information on silicon mockup installation tests • More information on RunIIb schedule/commissioning altogether • Overall, D0 agrees with this

  8. Baseline Change Proposal Review(s) • DZero had a special PMG on April 27 dedicated to reevaluating the cost of the upgrade project • Aim was to reevaluate the contingency and return what wasn’t needed • Looked at risk and project estimate to complete to recalculate contingency • Change requests and BCP were generated • We have implemented all necessary change requests and they are reflected in April’s CPR • This exercise was repeated with the DOE May 27 • Comments on the BCP were made • More details are requested as an attachment to the BCP • Risk analysis, FTE and cost tables • We are working on this From proposed Baseline Change Proposal Total cost savings of $1.8M

  9. Cost Performance Report 4/30/05

  10. DOE MIE Current Spending Estimate To Completion Total MIE Costs Through 4/30/05 Includes PO’s, but not RIPS Does NOT include RunIIb Silicon + Closeout Costs
