  2. Overview of the status: eRHIC  DoE & eRHIC  BNL Comments by PP&RM A Timeline for eRHIC related events….w.r.t. NSAC/DoE eRHIC machine parameters for physics eRHIC Physics Case: What has been looked in to? In what detail? eRHIC accelerator + interaction region design • Ideas for near/far future work: New physics topics? Detector simulation package(s) Monte Carlo generators for eRHIC physics studies Detector development ideas  communication with accel. group • Homework for all of us: volunteer and take up topics & responsibilities to be completed in a reasonable time frame; Student participation? Undergraduate/graduate/post-docs (side-projects) • Effective communication amongst us on a regular basis: Web pages, their maintenance; regular phone/video/non-virtual meetings, email-lists: eic-news-l@bnl.gov, eic-physics-l@bnl.gov, eic-det-l@bnl.gov , eic-accl-l@bnl.gov, ….. Timeline for eRHIC • Today is June 2003  18 months of hard work by all…… • Start putting together all material Jan 2005 • Complete almost final draft “CD0” July 2005 • NSAC Long Range Planning next meets 2005/6 eRHIC should be approved at that time! Need final “CD0” • R&D money starts 2007/8 • Construction starts 2008/9 3-5 years of “staged” construction • First collisions 2012(?) Abhay Deshpande

  4. EIC vs. DIS Facilities (I) • New kinematic region • Ee = 5-10 GeV • Ep = 30 – 250 GeV • Sqrt(s) = 20 – 100 GeV • Kinematic reach of EIC x = 10-5 0.6 Q2 = 0  105 GeV • High Luminosity L ~1033 cm-2 sec-1 Abhay Deshpande

Scientific Frontiers Open to eRHIC • Nucleon Structure: polarized & unpolarized e-p/n scattering -- Role of quarks and gluons in the nucleon -- Spin structure: polarized quark & gluon distributions -- Unpolarized quark & gluon distributions -- Correlation between partons  hard exclusive processes leading to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD’s) • Nuclear structure: unpolarized e-A scattering -- Role of quarks and gluons in nuclei -- e-p vs. e-A physics in comparison • Hadronization in nucleons and nuclei & effect of nuclear media -- How do partons knocked out of nucleon in DIS evolve in to colorless hadrons? • Partonic matter under extreme conditions -- e-A vs. e-p scattering; study as a function of A Abhay Deshpande White paper submitted to NSAC: http://www.bnl.gov/eic

  7. http://www.bnl.gov/eic Unpolarized DIS e-p at eRHIC • Large(r) kinematic region already covered at HERA but additional studies at EIC are possible & desirable • Uniqueness of EIC: high luminosity, variable Sqrt(s), He3 beam, improved detector & interaction region • Will enable precision physics: -- He3 beams  neutron structure  d/u as x0, dbar(x)-ubar(x) -- precision measurement of aS(Q2) -- flavor separation (charm and strangeness) -- precision gluon distribution in x=0.001 to x=0.6 -- slopes in dF2/dlnQ2 -- photo-production physics -- exclusive reaction measurements pion structure function measurements…. -- nuclear fragmentation region measurements Abhay Deshpande

  8. http://www.bnl.gov/eic Polarized DIS at eRHIC • Spin structure functions g1 (p,n) at low x, high precision -- g1(p-n): Bjorken Spin sum rule better than 1% accuracy • Polarized gluon distribution function DG(x,Q2) -- at least three different experimental methods • Precision measurement of aS(Q2) from g1 scaling violations • Polarized structure function of the photon from photo-production • Electroweak structure function g5 via W+/- production • Flavor separation of PDFs through semi-inclusive DIS • Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS)  Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) • Transversity • Drell-Hern-Gerasimov spin sum rule test at high n • Target/Current fragmentation studies • … etc…. Electron-Ion Physics • Statistical accuracies of measurements with 2 or three nuclei calculated (Ca, C, Sn, Pb) • Systematic uncertainty studies dearly needed • High parton density nuclear media: Many theoretical models and predictions exist • Quantitative comparisons with expected uncertainties on measurements at eRHIC and those theoretical predictions still needs to be done. --Needs communication by experimentalists with some of the theorists (Raju, Dima, McLerran, Jamal etc.) Abhay Deshpande
