Subjunctive Usages • Commands (situation) (always pres. sub.) • EVD + que + change of subject • IN (indefinite article, negative indefinites) • ILA (adverbial conjunctions) • Como si (si) (always imp. sub.) • Cond. If (si) (always imp. sub.) • CQ (compound quier’s) • Por (adj/adv) que (por) • Extreme courtesy (situation) (always imp. sub.)

  3. Commands • Recognize commands by the situation • All commands EXCEPT aff. Tú, come from the subjunctive. • Only uses present subjunctive • Does not need a secondary clause ie…Hágalo ahora.

  4. EVD’s • Watch for the QUE • An expression of emotion, doubt or volition (indirect command) + que + change of subject = subjunctive. ie…Yo quiero que él vaya al colegio hoy.

  5. IN’s • Watch for the indefinite article and negative indefinites • When the subject of the adjective clause may or may not actually exist. It is almost as if a GHOST were the subject. ie…Yo busco una persona que pase la aspiradora.

  6. ILA’s • Watch for the following adverbial conjunctions Adverbial clauses – Usage based on box Always w/ future, baby future, w/ uncertainty or command or uncertainty hypothetical

  7. Como si • Watch for the “si” (no accent) • Adjective clause indicating “as if”. • Always is followed by the imperfect subjunctive ie…Gastan dinero como si fueran millonarios.

  8. Conditional if • Watch for the “si” (no accent) • Not all if clauses use the subjunctive, look for the conditional in the other clause. • Always is followed by the imperfect subjunctive ie…Si Paco viniera, yo hablaría con él.

  9. CQ’s • Watch for the compound quier’s • The subjunctive is used after compounds of –quiera ie…Yo no se lo daré, quienquiera que sea .

  10. Por (adj/adv) que … • Watch for the “por” • Expresses however or no matter how Por difícil que sea, lo haré .

  11. Extreme Courtesy • Recognize by the situation • Used to express courtesy and refined language skills • Always uses imperfect subjunctive • Does not need a secondary clause Yo quisiera un vaso de agua, por favor.

  12. Practice hagas sea • ¡No lo ________ (hacer) ahora! • No hay nada que _____ (ser) difícil para él. • Si él ______ (saber) eso, vendría en seguida. • Habla como si ________ (tener) mucha confianza. • Cualquier libro que Ud. ______ (leer), aprenderá algo. • Por rico que _____ (ser), no querría prestarnos dinero. supiera tuviera lea sea
