  2. General Expectations • Come with a good attitude • Pay attention, participate and try your best • Have good attendance • Be on time to class • Bring your text book and materials to class • Complete your homework for each class as well as you can • Respect other people and school property

  3. Welcome to IB chemistry year one! This year’s topics include most of the course of the IB Standard Level Curriculum: Atomic structure Periodicity Stoichiometry Bonding Energetics Kinetics Equilibrium

  4. DO NOT… Do not eat junk food during class Do not drink soft drinks or eat junk food in this room Do not use cell phones Do not listen to ipods or music during class Do not disrupt the learning of other students Coffee, tea, and water are allowed!

Required materials 1.A chemistry notebook for notes and homework 2.A Scientific Calculator – Get one now! 3.The Chemistry text 4.Something to write with: pen and/or pencil 5.A folder for worksheets and handouts 6.A day book or homework agenda to plan your homework 7. An internet connection • 8. Pen Drive

  6. Class participation • Prepare for class without being asked. • Write down the homework in your agenda • Pay attention to the instructions • Participate in all learning activities • Work out the problems • Use class time wisely • Listen to other people when they speak

  7. Laboratory 25% of our time will be in the laboratory. Read the handouts before each practical and prepare data tables in advance. During the laboratory, write observations and make good use of the laboratory time. Expect to see questions about the experiments on tests and quizzes.

  8. Laboratory continued Students who are absent must make up the practical as soon as possible after school or during a free period. All practical reports are due one week after the experimental work is completed. Use turnitin.com Lower grades will be given to late work. All Lab reports will be written individually, unless otherwise stated. Do not send ANY part of your lab report to another person.

  9. Academic Integrity • When the assignment is individual, it must be unique. • DO NOT send your lab reports to other people. • If the assignment was given as a GROUP assignment, submit ONE copy of the assignment with both names on the assignment.

  10. Homework キExpect to do 30 minutes of chemistry homework between each lesson. キRead the assignment and try to do the problems as well as possible. キBring your questions on the assignment to the next lesson with you. キIf you are absent, check the webpage!

  11. Quizzes • Quizzes are meant to give feedback to you and myself about what you have learned. • All quizzes must be made up as soon as possible if missed due to an absence.

  12. Requiz Policy 1.In order to be permitted to requiz, the student must have ALL of the homework from the book completed before the original quiz. 2.The quiz must be corrected and the student must study the whole topic. 3.There must be evidence that the person studied to improve their understanding of the topic. (Show Ms Oehlke your notes, the pages you read, the website you used…) 4.Come to retake the quiz on time.

  13. Requiz Policy Continued 5.The date that is scheduled for the requiz must be respected and the student must be responsible enough to remember to show up. (no reminders) 6. The student must be on time. (Lunch requizzes start at 1:00, after school: 3:15) 7.If something happens and you cannot come to the requiz, please apologize. 8.The student will receive the NEW score.

  14. Tests • Tests follow each unit or set of units • Students should do well on them because they had feedback on their learning from the quizzes and labs

  15. Grading: • 65% Tests and quizzes • 25% Practical reports • 10% Daily assignments

  16. Extra help • Extra help is available during the breaks, at lunch or after school. • I will schedule a regular day for extra help, but you can come in any time before an assignment is due to ask questions

  17. Communication • All homework is posted on my website. www2.nido.cl/~doehlke/index.htm • Most of the handouts will be on the site • Links for extra help are included • If you are absent, you are expected to keep up and know what is going on by checking the website • If you have questions, my email address is doehlke@nido.cl
