Supporting Activities at the Novice Range • Understanding commands • Recognizing gestures • Identifying people, places, and objects from oral or written descriptions • Comprehending oral exchanges on familiar topics • Connecting to information in other areas • Listening to simple passages for main idea or key words

  4. Interpersonal Mode of Communication Overview

  5. Objectives • Engage in conversations • Provide and obtain information • Express feelings and emotions • Exchange opinions

  6. Examples • Give and follow simple directions, commands, and requests • Imitate appropriate gestures • Ask and respond to simple questions • Exchange information using words, phrases, and short sentences on familiar topics • Exchange information about the main characters or main idea in written selections

  7. Key Points • Frequent practice must be given • Activities must challenge students • Activities should aim for realism • There should be a clear objective for each activity

  8. Teacher Role in Activities • Participate without interrupting • Listen to students and respond to content, not form • Use a normal rate of speed and natural language
