  2. Introduction The first Iditarod race began on March 3, 1973. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins in Anchorage and ends in Nome. Each team has approximately 16 dogs. There are 26 checkpoints on the northern route and 27 on the southern route.

  3. Dogs There are two main dog breeds for racing , the Alaskan huskies and Siberian huskies. The dogs must wear mittens when they race. They may also wear blankets. The teams may have up to 16 dogs .All mushers must start with 15-16 dogs.

  4. Mushers My musher is Anna Berington. This year her bib number was 52. Anna Berington is 30 years old and was born in northern Wisconsin. Her hometown is Kasilof, Alaska. This was Anna’s 2nd Iditarod.

  5. Routes There are two routes used for the Iditarod. The routes are the northern route and the southern route. The northern route has 26 checkpoints, and the southern route has 27 checkpoints. If its an even year they use the northern route. In odd years they use southern route. Each route is approximately 1,045 miles long.
