  3. History of the Iditarod * Named in honor of the 1925 serum-run from Nenana to Nome * Founded by Dorothy Page and Joe Redington, Sr., in 1967. *First race had 34 mushers and a $50,000 purse. *This year’s race has 100 mushers and a $300,000 purse.
