  5. ALUMINIUM – a brief • It is the 3rd most Abundant Metal in the Earth’s crust • Hans Christian Oersted produced the first few drops of Aluminium in 1808 • Napoleon Bonaparte used aluminium spoon & fork in 1879; Aluminium was then considered more noble and costlier than gold and silver. • Hall–Héroult process is the major industrial process for the production of aluminium and is invented in 1886, made aluminium extraction economically viable.

  6. Aluminium Extraction Process • Mining of Bauxite • Crushing and Grinding • Treatment with Sodium Hydroxide (NaoH) to get Sodium Aluminate • Hydrated Alumina is then Calcinated to get Dry Alumina • Fused salt electrolysis is done to get molten Aluminium • Casting

  7. Aluminium - Primary Products Rolling / Slab casting Direct Casting

  8. Aluminium Primary Products Ingot Casting Log Casting

  9. Benefits of Aluminium • Light Weight • Good strength to weight ratio • Corrosion Resistance • High Electrical and Thermal Conductivity • Attractive and Aesthetic • High Ductility • Weld ability • High Impact absorption • Odorless • Durability • Versatility • Recyclability
