  1. Leadership Lid God blesses faithful stewardship with greater responsibility and greater influence.

  2. My Background • Raised Non-SDA • Three Years in Army • Commercial Industrial Electrician • Called To Pastoral Ministry • Led Missionary Group In Refugee Camps • 25 years old, 1 year of College • 18 months as an Adventist • Planted my 1st Church in Thailand • Pastoring for 26 years 2

  3. Level Up! • Luke 2:52 “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” • Daniel 1:20 “In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.”

  4. Leadership Lid Your maximum leadership potential right now, as you use your: Talents Social Skills Self-DisciplineSpiritual Maturity CharacterFaith VisionKnowledge Time

  5. Raise Your Lid • In Pairs: Which one of these areas do you need to grow in to raise your leadership capacity? • Pray for each other.

  6. Raise Your Lid Great leaders do what others can’t even imagine with the same tools and resources.

  7. Leadership Lid Definition: the current maximum leadership potential a person has to lead and influence individuals and organizations. How many people can you lead effectively?

  8. Jethro counsels Moses: Exodus 18:17-23 • “the thing you do is not good…you will wear yourselves out.” • “Select able men” • “Teach them” • “Let them judge” • “If you do this you will be able to endure” Examples Of Leadership Lid

  9. Joseph: from dungeon to Deliverer • Spoiled, favorite son, shepherd boy • Sold by his brothers as a slave • Bought by Potiphar • No visible, formal training

  10. Grew in his abilities and talents until he stepped out of the dungeon and became Prime Minister • Duties included the most menial tasks; cleaning the toilet, painting, mopping floors, mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, trimming hedges • How did these duties prepare him to be a great leader?

  11. How Did They Do It? How did these leaders raise their lid? Discuss In Pairs or Triads: (10 min) • David: shepherd boy to King • Apostle Paul: Saul the persecutor • Moses: Ineffective Deliverer to Faithful Deliverer 18

  12. Holistic Stewardship • “He who is faithful in that which is least is also faithful in much. Matthew 25:21 • “Why would God send more people to our church if we don’t have a great dream. Why would God give a multi-gifted, multi-talented, and financially wealthy person to a church if the biggest thing you are going to do is paint the restrooms next year.” John Maxwell • “God gives us resources according to our dreams and according our obedience.” John Maxwell

  13. Money, Time, Influence “Those whose hearts are filled with the love of Christ, will follow the example of Him who for our sake became poor, that through His poverty we might be made rich. Money, time, influence—all the gifts they have received from God’s hand, they will value only as a means of advancing the work of the gospel. Thus it was in the early church; and when in the church of today it is seen that by the power of the Spirit the members have taken their affections from the things of the world, and that they are willing to make sacrifices in order that their fellow men may hear the gospel, the truths proclaimed will have a powerful influence upon the hearers.” Acts of the Apostles, 71 20

  14. Often we wait for Great Opportunities to come while daily Small Opportunities parade by. • God blesses us according to our faithfulness in the small things. • Growth is a matter of faithfulness.

  15. 9 Lid Blockers • Lone Ranger Mentality • No Compelling Vision • Competency Concerns • Time Management • Weak Faith • Low Motivation • Character Issues • Limited Exposure • Frequent Exposure to the wrong people 21

  16. 1. Lone Ranger Mentality • No team, no synergy • Limited ability • Vulnerable to blind spots & discouragement 22

  17. “Union is strength; division is weakness. When those who believe present truth are united, they exert a telling influence. Satan well understands this. Never was he more determined than now to make of none effect the truth of God by causing bitterness and dissension among the Lord’s people.” 5T 236 24

  18. 2. No Compelling Vision Thinking too small; no need for more workers, vision based on man’s ability not God’s power. Matthew 9:36-37 “Jesus said to his disciples, ‘the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest.”

  19. More Lid Blockers 3. Competency concerns: organizational skills, planning, procrastination, etc 4. Time Management: • The mother of all lid blockers • The one area where all leaders are equal 5. Weak faith in God’s power 6. Distracted: Low Confidence/ Motivation, Unresolved personal problems

  20. More Lid Blockers 7. Character issues: moral/ethical • King Saul held back by pride, self-sufficiency, lack of faith, fear of the people. • King David’s moral failure with Bathsheba caused the kingdom to split 8. Limited exposure: same people with the same thinking/mindset 9. Frequent exposure to wrong people

  21. 7 Ways ToRaise Your Lid • Deepen Spirituality • Pass It On • Invest Deeply In Others • Manage Yourself • Time Management • Keep It Relational • Be A Team Player

  22. Matthew 9:17 New Wine, New Skins: New lives demand new ways • Methodology vs. Spirituality: • Have we focused too heavily on copying methodology from successful churches and failed to lead & develop spiritual leaders? 1. Spiritual Development • Matthew 9:17 New Wine, New Skins • Methodology vs. Spirituality • Have we focused too heavily on copying methodology from successful churches and failed to lead & develop spiritual leaders?

  23. 2. Deepen Character • Psalm 119:97-104 • “I have more understanding than all my instructors” • “I understand more than the elders” • Proverbs 5:18,19,23 “way of the righteous is as the day dawn…grows brighter” • Ephesians 4:13,16 “to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” • Integrity flaws become manifest over time • “Be sure your sin will find you out”

  24. $ The Currency Of Heaven $ • Definition: “The spiritual behavior, attitude, and character the Holy Spirit looks for in those He will bless.” • John 14:15,16 • Acts 5:32 • Ezekiel 36:22-33 • “this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:21

  25. "Character is power. The silent witness of a true, unselfish, godly life carries an almost irresistible influence. By revealing in our own life the character of Christ we co-operate with Him in the work of saving souls. It is only by revealing in our life His character that we can co-operate with Him. And the wider the sphere of our influence, the more good we may do. When those who profess to serve God follow Christ's example, practicing the principles of the law in their daily life; when every act bears witness that they love God supremely and their neighbor as themselves, then will the church have power to move the world." God's Amazing Grace, 231

  26. 3. Invest Deeply In Others • Teach, Mentor, and Coach others who can have a broad influence • 2 Timothy 2:2 “the things that you have heard from me…commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” • NCD: Empowering Leadership • Talents grow by employment

  27. “The apostle made it a part of his work to educate young men for the office of the ministry. He took them with him on his missionary journeys, and thus they gained an experience that later enabled them to fill positions of responsibility. When separated from them, he still kept in touch with their work, and his letters to Timothy and to Titus are evidences of how deep was his desire for their success. Experienced workers today do a noble work when, instead of trying to carry all the burdens themselves, they train younger workers and place burdens on their shoulders.” Acts of the Apostles, 368 34

  28. 4. Manage Yourself • Develop Yourself: Get Coaching, Attend Workshops • Live A Balanced Life: • Matthew 11:28-30 • "If it's not light, It's not right!" • Take a vacation • Modeling: You can’t lead others where you haven’t been yourself

  29. 5. Time Management • Get The Big Rocks In First!! • Scheduling is critical • Roles to goals: • Husband, Father, Coach, Teacher, Leader • Goals to Calendar • Yearly goals & results • Monthly SMART goals

  30. 6. 31. 7. Be A Team Player • Together you are genius! • Look for others to team up with • Give others credit • Look for others who can augment your weakness. Yes, you have weaknesses!! 35
