Announcements & Discussion: AASL • In partnership with Achieve, AASL has released Implementing the Common Core State Standards: The Role of the School Librarian, an action brief on the role of school librarians in the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The brief was designed not only for school librarians who are supporting higher standards for student learning, but also for school leaders as they rethink and re-envision the role that the library can and should play in a major school initiative. http://www.ala.org/aasl/advocacy/resources • Best apps for teaching and Learning: http://www.ala.org/aasl/standards-guidelines/best-apps

  27. Circulation Question Would it be possible to use Alt ID instead of student barcode number for Continuous Checkout and have the system automatically switch between fields like it does with the barcode number? Answer: This feature is not available at this time. The way continuous checkout works in part is that there is a policy which defines that all patron barcodes begin with a “2” and all item barcodes begin with “3” which is the format of our 14-digit barcodes. This is how the system determines whether you are scanning an item or patron. Without the barcode definition, it would be impossible for the system to detect whether what is being scanned is an item or user id. INFOhio can submit this as an enhancement but with the barcode definition being such an integral part of how the function works, it is less likely to win support to become an accepted enhancement.

  28. eBooks Question It would also be helpful if more of the eBook titles could have lexiles added to the records. Answer: The titles in the INFOhio eBook Collection are digitized works from Project Gutenberg and therefore represent older, but still valuable, materials. These titles were cataloged by INFOhio volunteers and Lexile information was not readily available for these titles when they were cataloged. As Lexile information is becoming more important to library users, more vendors are trying to provide Lexile information even for older titles. INFOhio will be sending the MARC records in our eBook Collection to Mitinet to see if Lexile information could be added, but there are no guarantees that a Lexile level will be added. INFOhio hopes to complete this work before the end of calendar year 2013.

  29. Catalog Question More users are accessing reading level searches. It would be very helpful to be able to use some advanced searching tools especially the Item Group Modifier. Answer: Advanced searching tools are already available to further refine results lists at the bottom of the lists themselves. It is accepted that this is not readily noticeable there, but is available to further refine any list no matter the original search strategy. As for the reading program search page, we think it advisable to keep this page as simple as possible. It already has a filter for library. So perhaps adding a single filter like Item Group or Material Type may not be too excessive unlike adding all possible filters. We will look into this further for possible future inclusion.

  30. INFOhio Website & Resources Individual links to databases need to be static! They also need to be in a consistent format. Some go directly to the DB & others go to the link to the DB. We would prefer a direct link. It may be confusing for students to select World Book and then have to select the version they want. It would be easier to go directly to Early World of Learning or World Book Advanced. Answer: ON THE CURRENT (aka “old”) SITE: If users are authenticated, the only resources that require an extra “click” are ProQuest Ancestry (IP access only), LearningExpress Library (users have to create their own account), and Literature Online (two different URLs depending on authentication). We can streamline a bit more, if desired, but that seems to be wasteful considering we are soon going to a “new” website. Also, we provide links for each of the resources on the technical support page (http://infohio.org/ER/TechSupport.html#AuthURLs), but, as the page notes, the URLs are going to change when we go to the new site – there is nothing we can do about that.

  31. INFOhio Website & Resources Individual school usernames were not always working at home at the beginning of the year especially for BookFlix. Was that because it was new? We think they work now. Answer: To the best of our knowledge, the school un/pw has always worked from home. We have not received other messages contradicting this and even this note indicates that “they work now”.  Regarding BookFlix… To access BookFlix users must go through the INFOhio web site. They cannot enter their own username/password should they go to the BookFlix site directly.

  32. INFOhio Website & Resources Is there some way to request more AP practice tests be added to Learning Express Library? World languages (Spanish, French), Physics, Statistics. Answer: Melissa provided an initial answer to this at the meeting, but in addition we forwarded the question to the vendor and this is how they answered: Thank you for the exam and subject requests that you provided. I have forwarded them to our Content department for future consideration.  Although we can never guarantee that a specific test or subject will be added to LearningExpress Library, we do tend to base our additions to the site on feedback we receive from our subscribers. LearningExpress has not yet released the new content to be added to the site in 2014. As soon as I receive materials on upcoming additions to LearningExpress Library I will let you know.

  33. eBooks Question Would it be possible to get a spreadsheet of the eBook titles that lists interest levels (HS, MS, ES) and possibly lexile levels? Answer: For the BookFlix titles, Mary Nemeth collected this information in a spreadsheet. It was posted on the BookFlix help page (http://www.infohio.org/ER/BookFlixHelp.html) on October 23. The direct URL is: http://www.infohio.org/ER/BookFlix110titles_FALL13_span.xls

  38. INFOhio/Automation Updates x86 Migration At the October liaison meeting, we briefly discussed that NCC will be migrating our libraries onto one Sirsi server, moving from our two aging 'east' and 'west' Sun servers to the x86 virtualized environment.  Two pilot schools are testing: Clearview and Independence. NCC will send out a schedule for migrations. The first wave is scheduled to start in mid-January. Migrations will occur in alphabetical order except where there is a major conflict on the date.

  39. INFOhio/Automation Updates What does this mean for you? On the day of the migration, library staff should expect to have services down all day, although it is very possible that Workflows will be available again by the afternoon. Library staff will be able to use offline circ. You should *not* need to reinstall, reset properties, or make any changes that typically come with a software update.  There will be no changes to how Workflows looks or behaves; it is the same version of the software you are using now, just on a different server. You will not lose any report templates, scheduled reports, or need to change your Sirsi Workflows logins.  NCC will provide you with any new ports that might need to be adjusted on the district firewall by your technology staff.

  40. INFOhio/Automation Updates The links to your online catalogs will change and any district webpages will need to be updated. If you have added an OPAC widget to any of your school library webpages, that will need to be updated with the new server/port information. When you login to Workflows, you will need to change the server name and possibly the port. If your school uses the NCC attendance module, the link for that will change. Should your school use BookMyne or have a custom username/password for the INFOhio electronic resources, NCC will take care of contacting INFOhio to make adjustments so that the links to your OPAC are appropriately redirected.

  41. INFOhio/Automation Updates BookFlix is now compatible with the iPad However...it may be slow to load and the timing of the sound to the video may not always be synchronized.

  42. INFOhio/Automation Updates OPAC Stats for Reading Program Search

  43. INFOhio/Automation Updates Reading Program Report • Extracts titles with Fountas & Pinnell, Lexile, target audience, or reading program information in the 521 or 526 tag and provides the results in a CSV and tab-delimited file. • NCC would need to know for which library(ies) the report should be run and whether the results should only include properly formatted entries.

  44. INFOhio/Automation Updates • Options: a. Fountas & Pinnell information (521 tag) b. Lexileinformation (521 tag) c. Reading grade level (521 tag, indicator 0) d. Interest age level (521 tag, indicator 1) e. Interest grade level (521 tag, indicator 2) f. Any target audience note (521 tag) g. Accelerated Reader (526 tag) h. Reading Counts (526 tag) i. Any reading program (526 tag)

  45. INFOhio/Automation Updates Sample Lexile: Sample Fountas and Pinnell:

  46. INFOhio/Automation Updates • INFOhio DVC and eBook results can be filtered by grade band. • Change limit in CAT to: • Elementary only (see example to right) • Middle School only • High School only • Lower Grades • Upper Grades • No limitation OPAC Customization
