  2. Means of Transmission • Any type of sex with an infected individual will catch gonorrhea • Gender does not matter, can be spread to ANYONE

  3. Neisseria gonorrhea • Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhea • The bacteria grow in warm, moist areas of the body, including the urethra • In women the bacteria can be found in the reproductive tract • The bacteria can even grow in the eyes

  4. Symptoms • Symptoms usually appear 2-5 days after infection • In men symptoms may take up to a month to appear • Some people do not have any symptoms • In men; burning and pain while urinating, increased urinary frequency or urgency, discharge from the penis (white, yellow, or green), red or swollen opening of the penis, tender or swollen testicles, sore throat • In women; vaginal discharge, burning and pain while urinating, increased urination, sore throat, painful sexual intercourse, severe pain in lower abdomen, fever (if the infection spreads to the fallopian tubes and stomach are)

  5. Treatment • If you suspect you have gonorrhea, go to your doctor • The doctor will determine the best and most up-to-date treatment. • A single shot of ceftriaxone 125 mg • A single dose of cefixime 400 mg taken orally • Azithromcin 2g in a single dose may be used for people who have allergies to the other medicines

  6. Diagnosis • Gonorrhea is identified by staining a sample of the discharge and looking at it under a microscope • This is called a gram stain • Not 100% certain • Cultures (cells that grow in a lab dish) provide absolute proof of infection • Samples are taken from the cervix, vagina, urethra, anus, or throat

  7. If Untreated • In women: pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an abscess in or near the ovaries, inflammation of the Bartholin glands, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome • In men: an infection of the urethra, epididymitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland, higher risk of getting bladder cancer

  8. Statistics • The CDC estimates that around 800,000 persons in the U.S. get gonorrhea each year • Only about half of gonorrhea cases are reported • There are about 66,666 per month, 15,284 per week, 2,191 per day, 91 per hour
