What is gonorrhea

What is Gonorrhea

  • Easily spread

  • Bacterial infection

  • Often no symptoms

  • Can infect many different things (ex. throat, vagina, penis etc.)

  • It spreads by unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex.


Symptoms of gonorrhea

For Men

  • Greenish yellowish or white discharge for the penis

  • Burning when peeing

  • Burning in the throat (due to oral sex)

  • Painful or swollen testicles

  • Swollen glands in the throat (due to oral sex)

  • Is symptoms occur men should be able to see them in 2-14 days after infection

  • Painful/burning feeling when peeing

  • Bleeding between periods

  • Swollen glands in the throat (due to oral sex)

  • Burning of the throat (due to oral sex)

  • Low abdominal or pelvic pains

  • Doctor will use a swab and take a sample of fluid

  • Sample taken from the urethra (men) and the cervix (women)

  • Also possibly a throat or an anal test

  • Urine test

  • Gram stain (works better for men)

  • Antibiotics (don't stop taking them even if there is no symptoms)

  • Both partners must be treated

  • Health care provider will help pick best antibiotic for you

  • Have a follow up test 3 months after treatment

  • PID (pelvic inflammatory disease)

  • Condoms

  • Oral dams

  • Avoid sexual contact if you have symptoms of an STI or are being treated for an STI

  • Avoid sexual contact with someone if the have symptoms of an STI or may have been exposed to an STI

  • Talk with your partner about STI before beginning a sexual relationship
