Teaching Considerations • If we do not know where we are going, we will not get there • Everyday, you need to know your resources and eligible content to bring intention and focus to achieve Do you know the content and format of the PSSA, types of questions, content of the test, academic language? Are you using the same rubrics, are your students prepared, how do you know?

School Performance Profiles PDE--Public Site • This PA School Performance Profile serves several purposes: • Provides a building level academic score for educators as part of the Educator Effectiveness System • Provides information used in determining federal accountability status for Title I schools • Informs the public of the academic performance measures of each school, comprehensive career and technical center, cyber charter and charter school in Pennsylvania

  10. Eligible Content Needs • Frequent Teaching and Re-teaching • Duration—Often..daily and weekly • Number of Repetitions—Frequent, significantly higher for at-risk • Personal tracking system of when you teach Eligible Content Do you know Eligible Content well enough to teach it everyday?

  13. PSSA Format Math • Student score comes from: • - 60 multiple choice questions • - Three open-ended questions *4pt rubric • Students take: • - 72 multiple choice in grades 3 - 8 • - Four open-ended questions

  14. PSSA Format Math Examples of how OE items might be phrased: • Show or explain all your work. • Show all your work. Explain why you did each step. • Explain why [something is true or false] • Describe how [doing something affects something else; to find something, etc.] SCAFFOLDED RESPONSE—MULTIPLE QUESTIONS from ONE STEM

  15. Academic Language • Do our students know what they are asked to do? • Are they able to critically read directions? • How do you practice ? • We need to teach, practice, and apply the academic language of the test Take a look at the ACADEMIC LANGUAGE of the PSSA

  16. Writing We need to intentionally practice the forms of writing needed for the PSSA • Writing about Reading • Writing Essays- Narrative, Informational, Opinion • Use PSSA Rubrics • Frequency—Weekly • Are your expectations high enough? How are you practicing and how often?

  17. Students’ Needs What do students need to know? • Academic Language • How To Critically Read Questions • Test Taking Strategies • What they will encounter format and content • What to do if they don’t know

Pacing & Re-teaching • Use your time to support and reinforce Eligible Content • Know what to emphasize • Know what not to skip/edit • Know what to supplement*with intention • Know what needs to be repeated • Pacing is intended to allow for re-teaching, extended writing, and eligible content focus not to leave the curriculum and add in “favorites”
