  4. Responsibilities things that citizens should do as citizens one of the most important responsibilities of a person is to keep up with the issues and voting as Americans, we have a responsibility to vote because our government was founded on the principle of popular sovereignty

  5. Popular Sovereignty Power of the government lies with the people

  7. 5th Amendment • right to remain silent • due process of law

  8. 14th Amendment • guarantees citizenship • equal protection under the law

  9. Socioeconomic Status what class a person falls in depending on their wealth wealthy middle class poor etc.

  10. Discrimination treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit

Tolerance is the appreciation of diversity and the ability to live and let others live it is the ability to exercise a fair and objective attitude towards those whose opinions, practices, religion, nationality and so on differ from one's own it is not just agreeing with one another or remaining indifferent in the face of injustice, but rather showing respect for differences in people

  12. Patriotism denotes positive attitudes and love for a country by individuals and groups patriotism covers such attitudes as: pride in its achievements and culture, the desire to preserve its character and the basis of the culture, and identification with other members of the nation

  13. Multicultural Perspective when a person learns the way of life of people in a DIFFERENT country and develops and understanding of that culture

  14. Individual Rights are rights that people have, simply because they are human the government is interfering with your individual rights when it mandates what you can say, what you can wear, and what you can do freely

  15. Citizenship The state of being vested with the rights, privileges, and duties of a citizen.

  16. Naturalization To confer upon (an alien) the rights and privileges of a citizen. (Blood and Soil—Blood is Naturalized Citizen)

  17. Immigrant To come to a country of which one is not a native, usually for permanent residence.

  18. Melting Pot A country, locality, or situation in which a blending of races, peoples, or cultures is taking place.

  22. Oligarchy Government ruled by a small group of people

  23. Monarchy Government with a hereditary, single leader like a King or Queen

  24. Socialist a system that advocates the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

  25. Communism System in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.

  26. Dictatorship Form of government in which absolute power is exercised by a dictator

  27. Anarchy Complete lack of laws or government
