Physical adaptations - physical traits that help organisms survive and reproduce

  • Predator- an organism that live by preying on other organisms
  • Competition- two species fight for a limited resource
  • Extinction- when all members of a species die
  • Protective coloration - coloring blends into the environment
slide3

6. Behavioral adaptations - what an organisms does to survive

  • 7. Migration - seasonal movement of animals
  • 8. Nocturnal - physical characteristics suited for nighttime activities
  • 9. Diurnal - physical characteristics suited for daytime activities
  • 10. Dormancy - plants enter a resting or inactive stage
slide4

11. Endothermic - animal maintains a constant body temperature despite changes in the environment

12. Ectothermic - animal maintains body temperature by getting heat from its environment

Estivation - animals become inactive in summer; high temperatures, low water

Hibernation - animals become inactive in winter; cold temperatures, low food

15. Seed dispersal - seed design allows it to travel to new locations

slide5

16. Symbiosis - a close relationship between species that benefits at least one of the species

  • 17. Mutualism - a symbiotic relationship where both species benefit
  • 18. Commensalism - a symbiotic relationship where one species benefits, the other is not affected
  • 19. Parasitism- a symbiotic relationship where one species benefits, the other is harmed
  • 20. Mutation - a change in the DNA making up a gene
slide6

21. Pollination - mixes up genes creating diversity in organisms

  • 22. Invasive Species - a species not native to an area, that competes with native species
  • 23. Natural Selection - animals better adapted survive and reproduce more successfully passing on their genes to following generations
  • 24. Beak design - different beak shapes are suited for different food types
  • 25. Adaptation - anything that helps an organism survive and reproduce
