  10. Liberal Arts: What It Means We solve problems alone and with others. We seek breadth of knowledge and interdisciplinary connections. We engage in honest, open inquiry and we search for the truth as we understand it. We appreciate diversity and social justice. We think critically. We communicate effectively. We work to see multiple perspectives.

  11. What Does It Mean for Students?

  12. Which of the following ideas is least associated with a liberal arts education? • Ability to analyze information from various perspectives • Ability to earn an entry-level license for one’s chosen profession • Ability to communicate effectively in both writing and speaking • Ability to articulate and refine one’s own beliefs 9

  13. A UNC Asheville Degree: Nuts and Bolts • 120 hours total required to graduate • Liberal Arts Core (required of all students) • Major Courses • Electives • Completing requirements for grad school admission • 60 hours must be earned at 4-year institutions • Last 30 hours must be earned at UNC Asheville

  14. University Requirements • Cumulative gpa >= 2.0 to graduate • Major gpa >= 2.0 to graduate • GPA starts over with courses at UNC Asheville • Things to keep in mind: • Tuition surcharge begins at 140 hours (some restrictions apply) • Requirements differ depending on students’ entering status

  16. Finding Major Requirements • GradPlan • University Catalog (online only) • Policies and procedures • Major and minor information • How to add licensure • Course descriptions • Pre- and co-requisites • Semester course offerings

  17. Catalog Dates • The DATE of the catalog matters. • The 2016-2017 catalog will specify new students’ LAC Requirements. • The catalog in place when a student declares their major will specify their major requirements (ex: Joe declares major in Fall 2017…goes by 2017-18 catalog).

  18. To find out what is required in order to declare a major in a particular area, students should • Consult the UNC Asheville catalog • Consult their Embark materials • Review the email from the Registrar in their UNC Asheville account • Call up the department chairperson and ask. 1

  19. T/F: All students will pay the tuition surcharge. • True • False 1

  20. What catalog will contain a list of the LAC requirements for new students? • The one in place when they declare their major • The 2016-2017 catalog • The 2017-2018 catalog • This is a trick question, because there is no such list. 1

  21. Grades and Academic Standing • Academic Standing Policy: • To be in good academic standing, a student must have ALL of the following • Semester gpa of >= 2.0 • Cumulative gpa of >= 2.0 • Successful completion of >=67% of course hours attempted (earned hours/attempted hours) • GPA can affect financial aid (must be >=2.0) • Anyone who doesn’t meet one or more of these requirements is on Academic Warning

  22. Policy Reminders • Withdrawals • Limited to 3. • Best saved for extreme cases (extenuating circumstances) • Course Repeat/Replacement • Students can EXCLUDE 8 hours’ worth of poor grades from their gpa. • After hours are used, grades for repeated courses are averaged in gpa.

  23. What is the minimum gpa a student can earn in a semester to remain in good academic standing? • 1.75 • 2.0 • 1.99 • 2.01 9

  24. Max has earned Fs in 1 four-credit hour course and 1 one-credit hour course. After filing repeat course forms to have those grades replaced (excluded) by the grades from successful retakes, Max • Cannot repeat any more courses • Can repeat a three-hour course and exclude the grade if needed • Can repeat any course with a C- or less 10

  25. Accessing Student Records (FERPA) • Student must give permission • Online Proxy Access • Student assigns Proxy Access in OnePort • All assignment/revocation in the student’s hands • Opportunity to set a passphrase in case proxy contacts university • University faculty and staff cannot give passphrase info, so save emails!

  26. Where Students Can Get Help • Academic help • Academic Recovery Program • Peer tutoring, study skills workshops, academic coaches • Writing Center, Math lab, etc. • Counseling Center • Student Health Center • Biofeedback lab • Residence Hall Help • Faculty advisor • OneStop

  27. How Can You Best Help Your Student? • Keep balance in your interactions: Encourage and support, but resist intervening until you are certain that it is necessary. Encourage independence. • Encourage class attendance and participation. • Prepare to hear your student unhappy from time to time; encourage resilience and remind them that they are capable of doing hard work. • General rule of thumb regarding college happenings: Remember that despite the way it sometimes feels to the student, everyone working at UNC Asheville has the student’s best interests at heart.

  28. How’d I do? • Great! • I still have a few questions. • Thank goodness it’s my kid and not me. • Wow, this stuff is complicated! 10
