Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Student-Athletes and Academics The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at SIUE is committed to the academic excellence of our student-athletes.  Inspiring tradition, pride, commitment and excellence is something we work towards daily. It's about more than winning the game or bringing home the championship trophy. It's about more than teamwork, commitment and leadership.

  2. At Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Intercollegiate Athletics is a team effort aimed at achieving success both on the playing field and off the playing field. It is about student-athletes who give their personal best in the classroom and on the field.

  3. It is about a collegiate institution that provides an education that prepares our student-athletes for the next contest as well as for the next decade. It is about providing resources that make our goals a reality.

Academic Data on SIUE Student-Athletes • 02-03: Average GPA 2.889, 21% on Dean’s List, 41% had a cumulative GPA over 3.0 and 6 teams had an average team GPA over 3.0 • 03-04: Average GPA 2.968, 20% on Dean’s List, 40% had a cumulative GPA over 3.0 and 6 teams had an average team GPA over 3.0 • 04-05: Average GPA 2.938, 22% on Dean’s List, 48% had a cumulative GPA over 3.0 and 8 teams had a average team GPA over 3.0

NCAA Division II Policies on Academics CONTINUING ELIGIBILITY • Must earn 24 hours towards academic-degree progress each academic year. • Must maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (for good standing at SIUE). • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours during the fall and spring academic terms. • Must pass a minimum of 6 credit hours in the preceding term to be eligible to compete in the subsequent term. • Must declare a major no later than the beginning of their fifth full-time semester. • INITIAL ELIGIBILITY for Financial Aid, Practice & Competition (Qualifier) • High school graduate • Cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in • 14 academic courses in the core curriculum • Sum score of 68 on ACT (17 ACT) or 820 • on SAT (verbal and math sections)

Academic Services for Student-Athletes at SIUE • University 112 for Student-Athletes: • Mandatory for freshman student-athletes • Topics covered include study skills, alcohol use, personal responsibility, citizenship, utilization of campus resources, career exploration, leadership and time management • Course is team taught by the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative and another representative of Intercollegiate Athletics. • Academic Advising/Monitoring: • Undeclared student-athletes receive guidance pertaining to their academics, major selection and career selection from the Academic Advisor for Athletics. • Academic Advisor for Athletics monitors NCAA satisfactory progress and continuing eligibility requirements for all student-athletes. • Those students who are determined to be “at-risk” based on their grade point average/test scores are monitored on a continuous basis. Frequent correspondence between the Academic Advisor for Athletics and the student-athlete’s instructors occur throughout the semester. The Academic Advisor for Athletics and student-athlete meet on a regular basis to discuss academic progress.

A C A DE M I C S U C C E S S • Mid-Term Grade Reports: • Sent to each instructor/faculty member who has a student-athlete in his/her course approximately two weeks before the last date to drop a course with a “W”. • The comments allow the Academic Advisor for Athletics to conduct an academic intervention before the last date to drop a course with a grade of “W” if needed, as well as positively reinforce student success. • Return rate for Fall 2005: 78.45% • Study Tables • Held and monitored by each team’s coach. • Most freshman/transfer student-athletes and others recommended by the Academic Advisor or coach (based on gpa) are required to attend monitored study tables. • Study tables are held in various locations due to space issues. • Champs/Life Skills • Series of workshops that focus on academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal and career development and community service efforts. • Each student-athlete must participate in two Champs/Life Skills workshops and one community service project each year.
