  3. Ovaries • Main female reproductive organ producing hormones and egg cells

  4. Oogenesis • Creation of an ovum (egg cell) • Creates 1 gamete

  5. - primary oocyte unequally divided • secondary oocyte fertilized • 2nd division occurs generating a zygote • 1 of the 4 haploid cells

  6. Uterine Tubules Fallopian tubes or oviducts lined with cilia. Site for fertilization.

  10. Fimbriae • Fingerlike extensions that can connect to the ovary. Create funnel which encircles ovary.

  11. Uterus • Hollow muscular organ within pelvis where a fetus develops.

  12. 3-Layers • endometrium: inner mucosal layer-columnar epithelial and tubular glands. • Myometrium: thick middle layer-bundle of smooth muscle • Perimetrium: outer serosal layer covering the muscle body of the uterus and parts of cervix.

  15. Vagina Tubular organ that leads from uterus to the outside.

  16. Hymen • Thin membrane of connective tissue and stratified squamous that partially covers the vaginal opening.

  17. External Genitalia -Vulva • Parts that surround the vaginal opening

  18. Labia Majora and Minora Majora: two outer lips that are covered by pubic hair Minora: the smaller (minor) inside pair of labia (lips) of the vulva.

  19. Clitoris • Small projection at the anterior end of the vulva between the labia minora. Contains glans and sensory nerve fibers

  20. Vestibule • Space enclosed by the labia minora. Consists of glands and vestibular bulb (erectile tissue).
