FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Ovary or Ovaries • Females have 2 • Storage center for the eggs (ova) • X chromosomes only (everyone starts out as a female (nipples on everyone) • Female releases one egg a month when she reaches puberty (ovulation) • Stops when female reaches menopause • > 400,000 eggs (ova) at birth

  3. FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Fallopian tubes • 2 tubes located next to the ovaries but not connected to the ovaries

  4. Purpose of the Fallopian Tubes • To catch the egg when it is released by an ovary (random release) • Sperm will travel toward FT to attempt to join with an egg (ova) • If egg is present when sperm arrive – fertilization will occur • Fertilized egg then moves into a tube

  5. FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Uterus (womb) • Located between the bladder and the rectum (causing pressure during pregnancy) • Purpose • Nourish the fertilized egg • Organ of menstruation

  6. FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Birth canal • Passage from the uterus to the vagina • Cervix • Neck of the uterus

  7. FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Vagina • Female organ of sexual intercourse that allows penile penetration (only natural way sperm can enter her reproductive system) • It has considerable stretching ability (size of a fist) • Entrance of the penis and exit of the fetus

  8. FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM • Clitoris • External organ that provides her physical pleasure during sexual intercourse
