  5. A Troubled Empire • Marcus Aurelius was the last Emperor of Pax Romana. • A century of confusion and violence followed.

  6. Political Confusion The Gov’t grew weak, but the army grew strong. Emperor had to pay high wages to soldiers. Fighting broke out between legions. Civil Wars. By 284 AD – 22 Emperors in 50 years. Wealthy stopped paying taxes.

  7. Economic Weakness The weak Gov’t led to a weak economy. • Fighting disrupted trade and led to food shortages • Prices rose. Workers lost jobs. • The Gov’t produced more coins. Lacked gold and silver. • This led to inflation. People began to barter.

  8. Invasions Germanic tribes raided the Western Empire Persian Armies invaded the East Cities built protective walls. The government hired German Soldiers.

  9. Who was Diocletian? • A general that became Emperor in 284 AD • Divided the Empire into 4 parts with a ruler. • He set maximum prices for Wages and Goods. • Ordered workers to stay in the same jobs. • Diocletian was not strong enough to enforce his reforms. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Diocletian

  10. The Fall of Rome • Diocletian left power in 305 AD and fighting broke out. • Constantine became Emperor in 312AD.

  11. Constantine's Rule He wanted a stable workforce and military Sons had to follow their father’s trades. Constantine moved the capital to Byzantium. The city became Constantinople. Theodosius decided the Empire was too large. In 395 divided into the Eastern and Western Empires.

  12. Germanic Invaders 300- 400’s Germanic tribes began to expand into Roman territory. Visigoths asked for protection from the Romans against the Huns. The Romans treated the Visigoths poorly and they rebelled. 410 Visigoths with Alaric take and loot Rome. AD 455 the Vandals seize Roman lands.

  13. Roman Emperor Forced out 476 German General Odoacer takes power. No Roman ruler will ever rule from Rome again. This marks the end of the Western Empire Odoacer ruled for 15 years and was killed fighting the Visigoths. By 550 Germanic rulers had replaced the Western Roman Empire. Kept laws and religion.

  14. Rome's Influence Basis of US legal System Created a Republic form of Gov’t. Elected citizens to serve as Representatives in the government. Equal under the law / innocent until proven guilty

  15. Rome's Culture Use of the Latin Alphabet. (26 letters) Many languages based in Latin Roman Architecture influenced Washington DC. Developed concrete. Placed an importance on Literature / Reading

  16. Ancient Roman Religion Christianity is a major World Religion Spread through the Eastern Empire 300’s AD Emperors adopted Christianity. Christianity spread through the Empire.
