  1. Anatomy of the Heart Part 1

  2. Anatomy of the Heart Heart • Hollow organ • Located in the middle mediastinum • Surrounded by pericardium • Attached to the thorax by the great vessels

  3. Thoracic Cavity Thoracic Cavity Right Pleural Cavity Mediastium Left Pleural Cavity Left Lung Right Lung

  4. Thoracic Cavity

  5. Mediastinum Mediastinum • Median region between the two pleural sacs.

  6. Mediastinum Mediastinum Superior Inferior Anterior Middle Posterior Heart

  7. Mediastinum

  8. Anatomy of the Heart Heart • 12 cm long • 9 cm wide • 6 cm thick • Weighs between 250 and 350 gram

  9. Anatomy of the Heart Heart Chambers • 2 atria • Right Atrium • Left Atrium • 2 ventricles • Right Ventricle • Left Ventricle

  10. Anatomy of the Heart

  11. Anatomy of the Heart

  12. Pumps 2 sided pump Right pump – (RA and RV) pumps venous blood to the lungs. Left pump – LA and LV pumps arterial blood into the systemic circulation Anatomy of the Heart

  13. Surfaces of the Heart Surfaces • Sternocostal or Anterior Surface • Diaphragmatic or Inferior Surface • Posterior Surface or Base • Pulmonic or Left Surface • Apex

  14. Surfaces of the Heart

  15. Surfaces of the Heart Anterior Surface • Sternocostal Surface • Formed by the RA and RV and tip of LV

  16. Surfaces of the Heart Inferior Surface • Diaphragmatic Surface • Form by both ventricles

  17. Surfaces of the Heart Base • Formed by both atria • Located at the level of the 2nd ICS

  18. Surfaces of the Heart Pulmonic Surface • Formed by the LV, LA and Left atrial appendage

  19. Surfaces of the Heart Apex • Formed by the tip of the LV • Located in the 5th LICS in the MCL

  20. Borders of the Heart Borders • Right border • Left border • Inferior border • Superior border

  21. Borders of the Heart Right border • Formed by the right atrium • Slightly convex • Almost in line with the SVC and IVC

  22. Borders of the Heart Left border • Formed by the left ventricle and left auricle.

  23. Borders of the Heart Inferior border • Formed by the right ventricle and slightly by the left ventricle.

  24. Borders of the Heart Superior border • Formed by both atria

  25. Borders of the Heart Superior Border

  26. Surface Marking of the Heart

  27. Surface Marking of the Heart Right Border • Line convex to right • Extends from the 3rd RCC to 6th RCC

  28. Surface Marking of the Heart Inferior Border Extends from the 6th RCC to the Apex (5th LICS in MCL)

  29. Surface Marking of the Heart Left Border • Line convex to left • Extends from the Apex to the 2nd LCC

  30. Surface Marking of the Heart Superior Border • Line joining 2nd LCC to 3rd RCC

  31. Anatomy of the Heart Grooves • Atrio-ventricular groove separates the atria from the ventricles • Interventricular groove separates the left and right ventricle. • Major coronary arteries and veins lie in these grooves

  32. Anatomy of the Heart
