I’m ___________ • Daily Standard and essential questions are on the front board each day. • Unit Essential Questions will be on the board daily. • Performance Standards and word wall for the unit are posted. • Standards and elements for the entire nine weeks are on the wall at all times. • Homework assignments will be listed on the board. • Due dates will be posted on board and should be in your agenda/notebook too. • If absent you must make up work for each day that you miss or these will be zeroes.

  3. Class Rules • Be Prompt • The third or fifth late would get you fired at some companies. • Other companies have point a point system and you would lose a point for being late. When you reach a certain number of points you are fired. Example 5 points.

  4. Be Neat – you must write or print so that I can read the paper. If you future employers can not read your writing or numbers then you would not be able to keep your job. Example: You work at the warehouse and are shipping car engines. Your 5’s look like 3’s and the company bills the client for three car engines instead of five. Some clients would not report the mistake and keep the engines. How many of these costly mistakes could you make before you are fired?

  5. Be Alert – pay attention and don’t fall asleep. People get seriously injured at the worksite when they are not paying attention.

  6. Be Careful – push up your chair when you get up each time. You can prevent many accidents by taking precautions prior to the events.

  7. Be Honest – no lying, stealing or cheating – any one of those could/would get you fired at a work site usually the first time. Some would get the police called to pick you up.

  8. Be RespectfulBe Fair, Be Polite, Be Kind to everyone. You must have respect for diversity at the worksite. You will not be able to select who you will work with in the future.

  9. Always do your best and this could be your grade in class.

  10. What do you need in class daily? • Notebook • Agenda • Paper • Pencil or Pen • Yourself with a good attitude

  11. All grades count • If one Zero • 0 + 100 + 100 +100 = 300 • Total 300 divide by four grades • 300 divided by 4 = 75 • It takes three 100’s to bring every zero to a 75 average. • If you make a 50 + 100 = 150 • Divide by two = 75. Any grade is better than a zero. • How many 100’s would it take to bring 3 zeroes to a 75 average?

  12. Course Syllabus • Return with your signature and your parent’s signature for a homework grade. • Remember to return your internet permission form if you have not already done so.

  19. Do you want a job or a career? • Do you want to get any job just to make money or do you want to get a job that you like or love – which is a career. • A career to one person may be a job to another depending on their interest.

You have many choices, your future is up to you. • In this course we will look at your abilities, personality, goals and learn to research various careers. • You will learn to work in cooperative groups using effective communication skills. • You will conduct an interview with an employed adult.

  22. Make-up work • You have three days to make up all work from an excused absence or the grades will be entered as zeroes. • You are given zeroes for all unexcused absences.

  23. Homework • You sign the syllabus, your parents sign the syllabus and return as a homework grade. • If one of your parents would like to volunteer to speak about their career to the class, let me know and I will see if it can be worked into our class schedule.

COURSE TITLE: Career Discovery • Course Description: • The goal of this course is to promote essential knowledge and skills students need to apply self-assessments and decision-making skills while examining career concentrations and pathways. This course will expose students to positive work ethics, the importance of educational achievement, and the impact of societal issues on career choices. These essential components are necessary for educational and career planning success. • In this course, middle school students will gain an understanding of career program concentrations and career pathways offerings in Georgia. Students will develop an insight on how educational performance enhances career opportunities. Also, students will be exposed to work ethics and societal issues as they relate to educational and career goals.

  25. Georgia Performance Standards • MSCD7-1: Students will identify and evaluate work ethics and behavior characteristics needed for success in a career and in life. • Demonstrate the importance of positive work ethics in relation to success (Appearance, attendance, attitude, character, communication, cooperation, productivity, organizational skills, respect, and teamwork). • Identify examples of appropriate and inappropriate personal behaviors in specific school, social, and work situations. • Assess the consequences of positive and negative work ethic choices. • Perform activities that will develop effective communication and decisions making skills. • Explore group dynamics and interpersonal skills in order to foster teamwork

MSCD7-2: Students will investigate Georgia’s Career Program Concentrations that align with their personal assessments and identify possible career pathways. • Identify and analyze Georgia’s nine career/program concentrations: (1)Agriculture; (2) Architecture, Construction, Communications & Transportation: (3) Arts & Humanities; (4) Business & Computer Science; (5) Engineering & Technology; (6) Family & Consumer Sciences; (7) Healthcare Science; (8) Government & Public Safety; (9) Marketing, Sales & Services. • Identify career pathways that align with program concentrations. • Discover and coordinate personal abilities, interests, and personality traits with career concentrations and pathways. • Gather information from multiple resources based on current, unbiased, and accurate research related to self-selected career pathway options. • Evaluate employability skills, academic proficiencies, and personal qualities needed for success in self-selected pathway. • Examine employment outlook/demand in self-selected pathway.

  27. MSCD7-3: Students will understand the importance of attaining educational achievement and performance levels needed to reach personal and career goals. • Describe study skills and learning habits and styles that promote educational achievement and performance. • Recognize correlation between personal educational achievement/performance and workplace success or failure. • Identify and examine existing pathways, course offerings and graduation requirements at local high school(s). • Examine post-secondary options linked to pathway specific occupations. • Identify individual career and educational goals. • Demonstrate the decision making process while creating, analyzing, and managing a career plan that promotes attainment of specific career goals (Peach State Pathways: Education and Career Plan).

  28. MSCD7-4: Students will recognize the impact of societal issues on their ability to function effectively in a diverse and changing world. • Recognize and assess the impact of life roles (Personal, leisure, community, learner, family, and work). • Recognize the need for respect, openness, and acceptance of all human diversity. • Describe how stereotypes, bias, and discrimination may affect and limit career choices. • Examine the positive benefits and outcomes of non-traditional careers. • Recognize that changes in technology, society, and economy require updated knowledge and skills throughout life.

  29. Missing Work • I’m at school each morning for students to make up missing work. • If you need to stay after school, you need to make an appointment with me and then bring an note from your parent stating the date and time you are to be picked up.
