Career development means the employee progresses in their skills, responsibilities and seniority As workers grow more experienced and skilled they wish to take on new duties, new tasks, and authority over other workers, and of course they wish to be rewarded for this work – higher pay, bonuses etc. So how does career development happen ?

  3. Training Training and identifying training needs. Without training, workers would not reach their potential, and feel let down by their employers. Training of workers, gives the firm flexibility, workers who are trained able to adapt to changes more easily and contribute more to the firm. Training motivates, and allows workers to reach their potential and contribute fully to the business.

  4. Types of Training – on-the-job On-the-job, learning by doing. With on-the-job training an employee is shown or taught how to complete tasks by amore experienced worker. Benefits of on-the-job training. ·No disruption to workplace through worker absence. ·Low cost ·Training directly relevant to job. Costs of on-the-job training ·Management time spent planning training ·Management or supervisor time spent doing the raining ·Potential reduction in quality of output as trainee completes work

Types of Training – off-the-job Off-the-job training , where the employee attends college to study for qualifications such as GNVQ's, or by distance learning, or through the use of internal (in-house) courses structured directly for the needs of the firm Benefits of off-the-job training ·Wider range of skills gathered ·Input of new ideas into he workplace ·Employee gains worthwhile qualifications. • Costs of off-the-job training • ·Lost production, and disruption to workplace when employee absent • ·Actual costs of courses • ·The worker may seek to use his qualifications to seek better employment elsewhere

  6. Types of Training – certificated A certificated training course or programme is a course which has been accredited by a company or by an industry regulator. Certificated training is important in a wide range of industries, as often workers are not able to do the job without the relevant certification. Examples of this need are found in the utilities industries e.g. gas fitters require CORGI certification, and in computing, where certified training by Microsoft is required for a wide range of IT technician jobs.

  7. Personal Development Plan A personal Development plan will look at the workers existing skills, knowledge and experience and identify any weaknesses. Then the Development Plan will allow the putting together a training package that develops skills and knowledge.
