  3. What are the shortcomings of representing energy flow through ecosystems as a pyramid? • The energy flow through ecosystems is staggeringly more complex than a simple pyramid • Most organisms do not fit neatly into a given trophic level, since most organisms have lots of things in their diet.

  26. Imagine you are on a spaceship to another galaxy. The spaceship is very large, and there are 10 total astronauts. The trip will last 50 years, so NASA has built a large field in the middle of the spaceship where you can grow things like corn, wheat, tomatoes and rice. The field can provide 8,000,000 calories a year. You also have 4 chickens and 2 foxes. You can breed these animals to increase the population. NASA is allowing you to decide what you would like to eat over the next 50 years. You need 6,000,000 calories a year to keep all ten astronauts alive. Would you: • Eat all the corn, wheat, tomatoes and rice? • Feed the corn, wheat, tomatoes and rice to the chickens and eat the chickens? • Feed the corn, wheat, tomatoes and rice to the chickens, feed the chicken to the foxes and eat the foxes?
