You will be learning about each food group, how many servings each should have, and what food belongs in each. • Be sure to pay attention- there will be a quiz at the end and you will be creating your own food pyramid next week!   5. Fats, Oils, and Sweets • Eat very few of the foods in this food group • In this category belongs: Candy Oil Lollipop

  6. What belongs in this food group? • Oils are considered fats that are liquid at room temperature, like many of the oils you use when you cook. Oils can be found in many different plants and fish. • Common oils: Canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil. • There are many foods that are naturally high in oils such as nuts, olives, avocadoes, even some fish. • Foods that are mainly oil include mayonnaise, certain kinds of salad dressing and soft margarine with no trans-fat.

  11. What belongs in the fruit group? • Any fruit or 100% fruit juice can be counted in this food group. As you know fruit can come in many forms: fresh, frozen, canned, or dried, they can be whole or sliced. • Some very common fruits include strawberries, apples, bananas, oranges, grapefruit, grapes, and blueberries. An unusual one that is counted in the fruit group is a tomato.

  15. Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese • 2 to 3 servings daily is your goal to achieve • Think of how many dairy servings you’ve had today Ice Cream Cheese Milk

  16. What belongs in the Dairy group? • The first thing many people think of is milk in the liquid form. • This group also contains many foods made from milk including yogurt, cheese, ice cream, and fat free yogurt. • To make the healthiest choice choose fat free or low fat milk products.

  20. Grains • This food group you need the most servings of, 6-11 to be exact. • What foods have you had today that you think belong in this food group? Rice Pasta Bagel

  21. What belongs in the grain group? • Food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, or another cereal grain can be considered a grain product. • Breads, pasta, oatmeal, biscuits, cereal, tortillas, and rice are all excellent examples of a grain.

  26. What belongs in the Vegetable group? • Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts in the vegetable group. You can think of many forms that vegetables can come in, such as raw (not cooked), cooked or steamed; fresh, frozen or canned; whole, cut-up or mashed! • Some common vegetables: carrots, broccoli, lettuce, celery, corn, and potatoes to name a few.

  28. Meats, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts • In this food group try to get 2 to 3 servings daily. • What kind of foods do you like from this category? Ham Peanut Steak

  29. What belongs in this food group? • Foods made from meat, poultry, fish, dry beans or peas, eggs, nuts, and seeds can all be considered part of this food group. • When choosing meat and poultry choose low-fat fish, nuts, and seeds contain healthy oils, so you can eat lots of these foods.

  35. Physical Activity • With any healthy life style it not only requires you to eat healthy but also to get physical activity. • The recommended amount of physical activity you should get each day is at least 30 minutes.

  36. Physical Activity • Physical activity can be anything from walking the dog to playing basketball or running. • Most students only get to have P.E. class once or twice a week so it’s important you do some on your own too! • What’s your favorite physical activity?
