  2. Why the Jews?6 basic reasons decided by historians: • Economic -- "We hate Jews because they possess too much wealth and power." • Chosen People -- "We hate Jews because they arrogantly claim that they are the chosen people."

  3. Scapegoat -- "Jews are a convenient group to single out and blame for our troubles." • Deicide -- "We hate Jews because they killed Jesus."

  4. Outsiders, -- "We hate Jews because they are different than us." (The dislike of the unlike.) • Racial Theory -- "We hate Jews because they are an inferior race."

  5. 1933 - 1939 make of 400 decrees and regulations against the Jews • National, State and Municipal level

  6. 1933-1934 • Limits participation in German life • April 7, 1933 can’t have Gov’t jobs • April 1933 - restrict number of Jewish students in German schools (1.5%) • Can not be in the medical or legal professions • Can’t be in the army • 1934 - can’t be an actor

  7. 1935 • September - official Nuremberg Laws • Take away citizenship • Forbid marriage/sex with non-Jews • No right to vote • Had to have 3-4 Jewish grandparents to classify as Jewish • Can no longer go to hospitals • No longer recognized in WWI memorials

  8. ‘Aryanization’ • Prevented from earning a living • Have the register all assets • Put Jewish businesses in to the hands of Germans • By 1938 Jewish owned businesses cut by 2/3s

  9. 1936 • Before Olympics Nazis toned it down • Did not want international criticism • Wanted international tourism

  10. 1937-38 • Must register all property • Jewish Doctors can not treat non-Jews • Revoke the licenses of Jewish Lawyers • Forbidden from “Aryan Zones’, theatres, sports, cinemas, schools

  11. August 1938 • Create measures to identify Jews more easily • If you had a non-Jewish name you had to add ‘Israel’ or ‘Sara’ to your name • Must have identity cards • Yellow star comes after the invasion of Poland in 1939

  12. Yellow star - why? • From 8th century in Muslim countries • Forced non-Islamics to wear a yellow star for identification • Christian countries adopt the practice in the 12th century • Hitler loves tradition to he adopts it too • Varies from yellow star to a white armband
