  2. What are the “blues and the blahs?” • A temporary bout of feeling down that passes • Many teens feel lonely or isolated from their peers • Talk about your feelings with a trusted adult

  3. How do you feel with depression? • An over-whelming feeling of apathy, worthlessness, hopelessness and despair • Lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything • A teen with 3 or more symptoms seen over a 2 week period

  4. Symptoms can be • Physical • Mental/emotional • Social

  5. Warning signs of Depression • Depressed mood • Lack of energy • Inability to concentrate • Withdrawal • Change in sleep pattern • Feelings of worthlessness • Indifference • Pessimism • Irritability • Thoughts of death or suicide

  6. Warning signs of Suicide • Lack of energy • Withdrawal from friends and family • No longer taking interest in favorite activities • No longer taking interest in personal appearance • Taking unnecessary risks • Expressing suicidal thoughts or talking a lot about death • Staying isolated

  7. Warning signs of Suicide • Talking about suicide • Drawing morbid drawings, poems or journal writings • Giving away valued possessions • Alcohol or drug abuse • Suicide note • Sudden change in behavior, dress or drop in grades • Depression

  8. Treatment • Talk therapy • Group therapy • Medications
