The Big Picture • The newly industrialized nations looked to the non-western world for ways to build their economic and political strength. • In the late 1800s and early 1900s, European powers claimed land in much of Africa. • Imperialism brought both benefits and challenges to every region of the world.

  3. Why we study this unit? • New forms of imperial rule were used by European countries to expand their power over the non-western world. • Colonial expansion contributed to an intense competition for a global empire between Europe’s leading powers. • Imperial conflicts would become a leading cause of WW I.
