  1. MICE Updates Target • Beamline • Quadrupoles • Target • Decay Solenoid • Beam Detecors • Spectrometer Update • Tracker Updates BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid Terry Hart, NFMCC Friday Meeting, September 26, 2008 NFMCC Friday Meeting

  2. MICE Beamline Quadrupoles Target • Leaks in 2nd set of quadrupole triplets • 3rd set has same design • These 6 quadrupoles turned off until fixed • Plan • Fix last triplet outside DSA while ISIS is running • Swap them for 2nd triplet during October shutdown • Hope repaired quadrupoles will be ready for November running BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beamline monitors GVA1, GVA2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors NFMCC Friday Meeting

  3. MICE Beamline Target Target • New MICE DAQ will receive target and ISIS beam loss information • No target depth information for now • New off-line system failure • Wear on upper bearing • Partially taken apart, sent to RAL Metrology group • Continued investigation • Alignment o.k. • Magnetization o.k. • Coil distortion? • Shaft distortion? • Poor coating? BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beamline monitors GVA1, GVA2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors NFMCC Friday Meeting

  4. MICE Beamline Target Decay Solenoid • Half of magnet won’t go superconducting (downstream end) • Plan: • Take off back of magnet during October shutdown • More work may be necessary in December including removal of cold mass • Good news: DSA walls won’t need to be moved BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beamline monitors GVA1, GVA2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors NFMCC Friday Meeting

  5. MICE Beamline Target Beam Counters • Both taken out of DSA • Noise problems being fixed • Single fiber planes to be replace by doublet planes • Should be ready by October shutdown BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beamline monitors GVA1, GVA2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors NFMCC Friday Meeting

  6. MICE Beamline Target GVA 1,2 GVA 2 • Electron beam detection tests • Time of Flight calibration and KL calorimeter response function study • Measure time of flight for 300, 200, 150, and 100 MeV/c tracks. • As momenutm decreases • Electron, pion peaks separate • Less pions GVA 1 BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors GVA1, GVA2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors NFMCC Friday Meeting

  7. 300 MeV/c NFMCC Friday Meeting

  8. 200 MeV/c NFMCC Friday Meeting

  9. 150 MeV/c NFMCC Friday Meeting

  10. 100 MeV/c NFMCC Friday Meeting

  11. Spectrometer Update • Issues with magnet #1 • Frozen N2 in cold mass prevented normal operation • Inadequate thermal connection • Venting of cold mass during quench not adequate • Mechanical issues • No provision of direct cooldown of cold mass radiation shield • Schedule • Complete magnet #2 with design changes • Ship magnet #2 to FNAL while opening up magnet #1 • Goal to complete magnet #2 test by mid-November • Magnet #1 assembly and completion about 2 months after that NFMCC Friday Meeting May not need to postpone magnetic field measurements until both spectrometers are at RAL

  12. Tracker Firmware - Zero Suppression:Keeping Data From Channels Above Threshold • Reduces time to digitize charges, times • More efficient data storage than when all channels are read out • Works at IIT and FNAL single-board test stands • Data unpacker debugged • For cosmic ray test • 7 out of 8 boards have almost no hits (1 board has expected hit number) • Will check RAL and FNAL spreadsheets NFMCC Friday Meeting

  13. Tracker Firmware - Data Buffering: 4-level buffer to allow data collection during data digitization • Logic has been verified in simulation • Tests with self-injected not working for short trigger periods • Bad values for reconstructed charges, times • Data format breaks down • These are repeatable • Some firmware modifications being written for tests • 2 events less than 100 ns apart • Check pedestal width vs. trigger period, buffer depth NFMCC Friday Meeting
