  1. MICE Updates Target • Beamline • Target • Decay Solenoid • Beam Monitors • Time of Flight Counters • Spectrometer • Coupling Coil Dipole 1 BM1 BM2 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Terry Hart, NFMCC Friday Meeting, August 15, 2008

  2. MICE Beamline Target Target Dipole 1 • In-beam target system fine • New off-line system failure • Wear on upper bearing • Partially taken apart, sent to RAL Metrology group • Initial results: shaft not moving co-linearly with bearing axis • Continued investigation BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beam line monitors

  3. MICE Beamline Target Decay Solenoid Dipole 1 • Cool-down complete with liquid helium in cryostat • Power tests started Aug. 4 • Results and latest status? BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beam line monitors

  4. MICE Beamline Target BM1,2 Dipole 1 • Beam seen in beam monitors on July 11 • Quadrupoles off • Plots on next page BM2 BC1 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beam line monitors

  5. - FNAL Beam Monitors BC 1,2 • July 11 • Quadrupoles off

  6. MICE Beamline Time of Flight Counters Target • First set of counters installed • First beam profiles taken on July 20. • Plots on next page Dipole 1 BM2 BC1 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B ToF Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beam line monitors

  7. Time of Flight Counters Horizontal Profile Vertical Profile

  8. Spectrometer Update • Possible modifications to reduce heat load on intermediate shield • Training of coils under full field underway • Modifications to room temperature leads • Improve thermal connection to first stage of cryocooler • Add liquid nitrogen cooling volume • Retest thermal behavior before shipment to FNAL • Ben Freemire, Michael Wojcik to give software update May need to postpone magnetic field measurements until both spectrometers are at RAL

  9. Coupling Coil Update • Work resumed at ICST at HIT • Technicians being trained in coil winding techniques • Consultant and designers on board • Orders to be placed for test cryostat for “large test coil” • Same diameter • ¼ length • Tentative finish in early December to be followed by progress review • Winding procedure under review at LBNL • Test coil winding underway as soon as August 20 Coupling Coils
