  1. Volunteering – again…… Volunteering…..again Jonathan Wright Voluntary Issues Research

  2. Remember us? • A revised set of questions were introduced in the 2005 survey. • Driven by the 2004 Volunteering Strategy • Possibility that level of volunteering was underreported. • Switch to showcard only.

  3. 2005 questions • New preamble • Undertaken any work or activities on a voluntary basis with any groups or organisations in past 12 months? (with showcard) • How frequently? • Number of hours per month? • Fields of activity? • What do people do? • Ever volunteered? • Why stopped? • Motivation to volunteer (again)?

  4. Results • Volunteering appeared to “fall” to 17% in 2005 Q3 • Not directly comparable, but not what was hoped for. • Citizenship and VDS surveys suggest higher levels (with different methodologies)

  5. What next? • Screening question reinstated • Showcard categories reduced from 25 to 16 • Questionnaire consultation.

  6. Options • Retain questions • Import from England – Citizenship survey • Comparability vs. Continuity – is either attainable?

  7. 2004 Conclusions: also today? • No “right” figure for the number of volunteers • Generally agreed approach within the time and space constraints of a cross-cutting quantitative survey • Baseline against which to measure progress over time • High expectations => not possible to meet all through SHS alone
