Sports Volunteering Facts • 5.8m sports volunteers in England - sport is the single biggest contribution. • Sport represents one of the largest sectors in all volunteer (26%) • 44% of young volunteers are engaged in sport and exercise • 1.9 million people give up one hour a week • Sport volunteers contribute one billion hours each year to sport (equivalent to a full time workforce of 80,000) • Sport and ICT have been found to be particularly effective in engaging young men and more disaffected young people. • People living in large cities tend to volunteer much less than their rural counterparts.

  2. The impact that volunteers have in grassroots sport is significant. Just under half (48%) of general participants questioned in Sport England’s Satisfaction Survey rated ‘the competence and commitment of the volunteers I came into contact with in my sport’ as important, while 77% of active club members and 87% of talented athletes agreed.

  3. Inspiration and Legacy from the 2012 Games Project Volunteering England and YouthNet’s Inspiration and Legacy from the 2012 Games project will ensure everyone who is inspired by the Games can find local, relevant and fulfilling volunteering opportunities quickly and easily.

How we’re doing it Strengthening the National Volunteering Database and Do-it, and making valuable partnerships to ensure all Games inspired volunteering opportunities are promoted far and wide (eg The 25th Hour) Working with Volunteer Centres and support services around the country to make sure organisations that involve volunteers leverage the power of the Games to help reach volunteers – by creating Games inspired volunteering opportunities

  7. Challenges and Opportunities Working with Governing Bodies: • To help deliver objectives in Whole Sport Plans. Working with Local Authorities and community groups: • To help deliver wider sport plans; and plug gaps that won’t be filled by a focus on clubs. Capitalising on the build-up to 2012: • We need to identify and develop more events and other opportunities to maximise the interest and excitement generated by the build-up to 2012. This is important: • if we are to demonstrate how 2012 can ‘add value’ and use the lessons learned to inform and shape the sporting legacy for hosting future major events; and • to help build a credible case for funding beyond 2013.

National Governing Body Volunteer Programmes vCricket -programme to introduce young people into cricket, offering a broad range of volunteering opportunities, providing: enjoyable, enhancing and sustainable programmes for both volunteers and clubs. RFU Volunteer Coordinators – supported roles with community clubs responsible for the recruitment, training and retention of the club’s volunteers. Golf Volunteers - online resources to develop to recruit, retain  and recognise golf volunteers who support the game
