  1. Volunteering Workshop Volunteering has always been about helping other people, but do you realise how much it can help you? David Ward (Head of Centre for Management, Business and Professional Development) Scott Kendall (Graduate Assistant)

  2. Session Objectives • Consider how you can utilise volunteering to benefit you personally and professionally • Provide a context of practice – the University of St Mark and St John (Marjon) • Provide details and links for further information & opportunities • Start looking at yourself like a product which you need to develop in order to sell and secure future employment.

  3. The Bigger Picture...think ahead! 73% of employers would employ a candidate with volunteering experience over one who doesn’t 94% of employees who volunteered to learn new skills had benefitted by getting their first job, improving their salary, or being promoted Currently, each graduate vacancy attracts an average of83 applicants to one job application.* * Higher Education White Paper June 2011

  4. How are you going to get there? • In groups of 3 / 4, make a list of the types of jobs you would like to get • Identify the barriers that may stop you from getting those jobs • Identify some good volunteering opportunities • Identify the benefits of volunteering • Feedback to the group

  5. The journey…. I don’t have any experience in sport… I’ve graduated Dream job in Sport I’ve started volunteering in sport You will need to consider how you develop professionally (i.e. by getting qualifications) and personally (i.e. by volunteering)

  6. Strategic Volunteering – Stage 1 • Consider how you are going to ‘plug’ the gaps in your CV (think about the job you want, maybe take a look at the job description). *Don’t leave it until tomorrow, start today…. Separate yourself from the rest of the job market…

  7. Stage 2 – Start the process and volunteer • Identify the types of organisations that will provide you with the necessary experience and skills that you need ResearchContact Meet “We believe young people if supported can realise their dreams and make a positive contribution to society and volunteering is the perfect way to make this happen. Never has this been more important than now with unemployment soaring especially for the young population.” Nigel Trood. CEO, Red Bull (Vinspired, 2014)

  8. Stage 3 - Don’t huddle with the sheep! Stand out from the flock!

  9. Stage 4 – Be recognised • Volunteering may lead to future employment with that organisation • Ensure you log what you’re doing, employers like to know what you’ve done “As an employer, I'm always keen to look for things in people outside the ordinary. Exam results are important of course, but we're also looking for other skills and other attributes. If somebody has volunteering on their CV, they are more likely to be attractive to potential employers.” Peter Bull, HSBC (Vinspired, 2014)
