  1. War, Terrible War

  2. World War • The British Southern Strategy: win the southern states, enlist the support of the Loyalists, end the war as fast as possible • By now, Great Britain is fighting a world war alone against France, Spain, and the Netherlands • The British sacked Savannah, Georgia in 1779 • Sack Charleston, South Carolina in 1780 • With Charleston secure, Henry Clinton returns to New York City leaving his second-in-command in charge

  3. The Battle of Camden, 1780 • Remember Horatio Gates? The hero(?) of Saratoga? • Remember how Benedict Arnold said he was an idiot who didn’t know what he was doing??? • Gates knew the British placed their best officers and soldiers on their right flank • Gates does the EXACT same thing: he puts his best soldiers on HIS right flank

  4. The Battle of Camden • Gates hasn’t mimicked the British…HE’S MIRRORED THEM • Gates has forgotten that the armies don’t stand next to each other…they FACE each other • The strong Continental right is facing the British left…meaning he’s put his most inexperienced soldiers on the left…head on against the strong British RIGHT!!! • The Southern Continental army is wiped out

  5. The Fox and the Hound

  6. Cornwallis vs. Greene • Cornwallis and Greene chase each other all over North and South Carolina • Cornwallis wants to force Greene into a single engagement to wipe the Continentals out • Greene wants to tire Cornwallis out

  7. Banastre Tarleton & Waxhaws • Tarleton, just 26, goes burns and loots every town in North Carolina • Nicknamed “Bloody Ban” • Massacres the people of Waxhaws, NC • A young boy survives the massacre and swears eternal hatred of the British

  8. The Fall of Benedict Arnold • Several Congressmen begin to attack Arnold’s reputation in the newspapers • Accused of having Loyalist friends • Accused his wife, Peggy, of being a Loyalist • Accused him of being corrupt (he was cleared) • Arnold has finally had enough

  9. Treason • Arnold begins secret communications with Henry Clinton and John Andre about turning over the plans for the Continental defense at West Point • The British agree to make Arnold a general and give him 7,000 British Pounds in exchange for West Point • Andre was caught with the plans of the plot…in his shoe…when he got robbed

  10. The Legacy of Arnold • Arnold becomes the most hated American ever for his betrayal of the Revolution • His name has been wiped from every memorial and monument in the American Military… • …Including the one at Saratoga • Benedict Arnold became synonymous with treason and betrayal
