Director’s Report to BRDI Genesis of the Board • CODATA and US CODATA • Discussions with NSF Data Committee and formation of IWGDD • NRC Policy and Global Affairs Division and Board on International Scientific Organizations Board mission: help improve the stewardship, policy, and use of digital data and information for science and society.

  3. Director’s Report to BRDI Statement of Task: 1. Address emerging issues in the stewardship, policy, and use of research data and information at the national and international levels. 2. Through studies and reports of the NRC, provide independent and objective advice, reviews of programs, and assessment of priorities concerning research data and information activities and interests of its sponsors. 3. Encourage and facilitate collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and nations with regard to common interests in research data and information activities.

  4. Director’s Report to BRDI • Monitor, assess, and contribute to the development of U.S. government and research community positions on research data and information programs and policies. 5. Initiate or respond to requests for consensus studies, workshops, conferences, and other activities within the Board’s mission, and provide oversight for the activities performed under the Board’s auspices. 6. Broadly disseminate and communicate the results of the Board’s activities to its stakeholders and to the general public. The Board also serves as the U.S. National Committee for CODATA.

Director’s Report to BRDI Recent and ongoing Board projects over past year: • Appointment of new Board members (see the full roster online) • Symposium and Workshop on the Future of Scientific Knowledge Discovery in the Open Networked Environment (March) and initiation of the young scientist program. • International Symposium on The Case for International Sharing of Scientific Data: A Focus on Developing Countries, with BISO and ICSU (April) • BRDI meeting and Symposium on Crowdsourcing (June) • Developing Data Attribution and Citation Practices and Standards, with CODATA-ICSTI Task Group (first Symposium and Workshop, August 2011), with 2 more meetings planned for 2012.
