  5. PARENTS ASK . . . • What are electives? • What extracurricular activities are available? • How can my child take honors courses? • What is a GPA? • What is block scheduling? • How do Standards of Learning tests affect my child?

  6. Family Meetings • STEPPING INTO THE FUTURE(5th to 6th grade) • PAVING THE WAY(6th to 7th & 7th to 8th grade) • HIGH SCHOOL: PATHWAY TO THE FUTURE(8th to 9th grade)

  7. GUIDING QUESTIONS • What are the expected outcomes? • What content is appropriate for each level? • What is the format of each meeting? • How can we promote a high level of participation ? • Where should the meetings be conducted?

FAMILY MEETING OBJECTIVES • Provide families with information concerning middle and high school • Provide families with an understanding of options after high school • Provide families with information regarding programs of study and graduation requirements • Promote family involvement and awareness

  9. THE PROCESS • Counselor committees were formed to design the workshops.

  10. THE PROCESS • Counselors were selected as site coordinators and presenters.

  11. THE PROCESS • Information concerning the workshops was disseminated via fliers, phone calling system, newspaper ads, and school public address systems.

  12. THE PROCESS • Counselors were given a “Family Meeting In A Box.” • PowerPoint presentations were developed, distributed to counselors, and placed on guidance website. • Counselors announced the workshops during classroom guidance sessions.

  13. Family Meeting Hints 1. Limit the family meetings to 1½ hours (45 minute general session, 15 minute refreshment period, and 30 minute break-out session.)

  14. 2. Provide family meetings during one week at several sites. • 3. Involve counselors, teachers, students, and administrators.

  15. Ensure that the meetings are well advertised. • 5. Provide handouts, pens/pencils, evaluation forms. • 6. Provide refreshments!

  17. HIGH SCHOOL BREAK OUT SESSIONS • Informal Setting. • Program takes place in classroom or auditorium.

  18. 3.School administrators and guidance counselors facilitate. • Students participate.

  19. 5. Breakout sessions provide an opportunity for parents and students to learn about individual high schools and ask questions.

  20. 6. Bring handouts from school. • 7. Show school video.

  21. 8. Talk about school policy and magnet programs. 9. Answer general questions concerning the high school experience.
