  2. ###DANGER### • SHOP AIR PRESSURE IS AROUND 100 TO 150 POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH! • THIS IS ENOUGH PRESSURE TO SEVERELY INJURE OR EVEN KILL! • YOU MUST UNDERSTAND AND RESPECT THE FACT THAT AIR CAN INJURE OR KILL!

THE AIR COMPRESSOR • The air compressor is the source of compressed air for the shop. • It normally has an electric motor that spins an air pump. • The air pump forces air into a large metal storage tank. • Metal air lines feed out from the tank to several locations in the shop. • The Technician can then connect a flexible air line to the metal line. • The compressor turns on and off to maintain a constant air pressure.

  4. What can air under pressure do? • A) blow off asbestos from brake shoes. • B) injure or kill you. • C) cool you off on a hot day • D) nothing it is perfectly safe.

  5. AIR HOSES • These high pressure flexible hoses are connected to the metal lines from the air compressor. • They allow the Technician to take the air pressure to the vehicle being repaired. • Quick disconnect couplings are used to allow the technician to connect and disconnect at any point in the shop.

  7. AIR TOOLS • Also called pneumatic tools. • Use air pressure for operation. • They are labor saving tools well worth their cost. • They must be cared for and maintained or they WILL FAIL! • ALWAYS LUBRICATE THE AIR TOOL BEFORE USE. • Squirt a few drops of air tool oil into the air inlet, this protects the internal parts and increases tool life.

  8. What should you do before you use an air tool? • A) clean it with soap and water. • B) take it out of its box. • C) lubricate it with air tool oil • D) just use it

  9. Air Wrenches • Often called impact wrenches. • Provide a very fast way of removing threaded fasteners. • A button or switch provides a way to reverse direction of the tool. • Impact wrenches come in various drive sizes. • Starting with 3/8, 1/2 and ¾ drive.

  10. CAUTION! • UNTIL YOU BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE OPERATION OF AN AIR WRENCH, BE CARFULL NOT TO TIGHTEN NUTS AND BOLTS OR LEAVE THEM TOO LOOSE. • IT IS EASY TO STRIP OR BREAK FASTENERS WITH AIR TOOLS.

  12. AIR RATCHET • An air ratchet is a special type of air wrench designed to work in confined spaces. • It will fit in between the radiator and the water pump so the pump can be removed. • Air ratchets are normally 3/8 drive but can also be 1/4 drive for lite work.

  13. AIR HAMMER • Often called a “zip gun” or chisel. • Is used to cut or hammer a stuck part off or out. • They can produce between 1000 and 4000 impacts per minute. • Several different attachments for cutting and hammering are available.

  15. CAUTION! • NEVER TURN AN AIR HAMMER ON UNLESS IT IS PRESSED TIGHTLY AGAINST THE WORK PIECE! • IF IT IS NOT AGAINST THE PIECE, THE TOOL HEAD COULD FLY OUT FROM THE HAMMER WITH GREAT FORCE! • JUST AS IF IT WERE SHOT FROM A GUN!

  16. BLOW GUN • An air powered blow gun is used to clean parts washed in solvent. • It is NOT used to blow off dirt or dust from parts before disassembly. • Many parts contain asbestos when it becomes airborne can cause cancer.

  17. CAUTION • WHEN USING A BLOW GUN, WEAR EYE PROTECTION. • DO NOT POINT THE TIP TOWARDS YOUR BODY OR ANYONE ELSE’S BODY. • REMEMBER SHOP AIR PRESSURE IS OVER 100 PSI AND THE AIR CAN PENATRATE YOUR SKIN AT THAT PRESSURE!

  19. AIR DRILL • The air drill is good for many repairs in the shop. • Its speed and power can be adjusted to mach the work you are doing. • Various attachments make a very versatile tool. • The attachments include rotary brush, rotary file, and drill bits.

  20. Bench Grinder • A bench grinder is used for grinding, cleaning of polishing operations. • The grinder may have either two stone wheels (one hard and one soft). • Or it may have one medium stone wheel and one wire brush. • Or it could have a stone and a polishing wheel.

SAFETY RULES FOR THE BENCH GRINDER • Wear eye protection and keep your hands away from the stones. • Keep the tool rest adjusted close to the stone if the rest is not close to the stone the part can be caught in the grinder. • Do not use the wire wheel to clean soft metal. The part will become ruined.

  23. DRILL PRESS • A drill press is a stand up drill used for drilling work that can be taken to it. • It has an adjustable table. • It can accept large drill bits.

Drill press Safety rules • Secure the part to be drilled with a vise or C- clamps. • Always use a center punch to indent the hole and start the hole. • Remove the chuck key before starting the drill! • To prevent possible injury release drilling pressure just before the bit breaks through the bottom of the part (Drill bits tend to catch when breaking through).

  25. TIRE CHANGERS • Two different types of changers on the market today the rim clamp and the center clamp. • We have both. • One is used for steel wheels and one is used for everything else.

  26. BUMPER LIFTS • NOT • USED • ANYMORE • BECAUSE MODERN AUTOMOBILES HAVE • AIR BAGS!

  28. FLOOR JACKS • The floor jack is used to raise either the front, sides or the rear of a vehicle. • To avoid damage to the vehicle the floor jack must be placed under a solid part of the vehicle. • It is very easy to crush a oil pan or a gas tank.

  29. Remember floor jacks have wheels • This means that the vehicle being jacked up must be free to move. • NEVER WORK ON A VEHICLE WITH JUST THE FLOOR JACK SUPPORTING IT! • The smallest vehicle weighs 2000lbs this is enough weight to ruin your day and make a mess of my shop floor!

  31. JACK STANDS • Jack stands support the vehicle during repair. • After raising with a floor jack use the jack stands to support the vehicle during the repair. • REMEMBER to place the jack stands under a solid part of the vehicle.

  32. TRANSMISSION JACK • The transmission jack is used for removing and installing transmissions. • There are two types of transmission jacks. • One is just like a floor jack except it has a larger saddle. • The other and most common is used while the car is raised on a over head lift.

  33. ENGINE CRANE • More commonly referred to as a cherry picker. • Is used to remove and install engines from vehicles. • It has a bottle jack which raises and lowers the boom arm.

  35. HYDRAULIC PRESS • A hydraulic press is used to remove and install parts that are pressed on to another part. • Examples include gears, pulleys, bearings. • The press used a bottle jack to either press off or on a part that is press fitted to another.

  36. DANGER PELIGRO • A HYDRAULIC PRESS CAN EXERT TONS OF FORCE. • WEAR EYE PROTECTION AND OBSERVE PROPER PROCEDURE WHEN USING THE PRESS!

  37. ENGINE STAND • Is used to hold an engine during overhaul operations. • The engine bolts to the stand. • The engine can be rotated on the stand for ease in working on all areas of the engine.

  38. COLD SOLVENT TANK • Called a parts washer is used to clean grease and oil from parts before reassembly. • Not much more to say its used to clean parts. • DO NOT BREATH THE FUMES! • DO NOT GET IT ON YOUR SKIN! • DO NOT SMOKE WHILE WORKING AROUND IT! • The solvent is flammable and toxic so be careful when using it.

  39. What is a cold solvent tank used for? • A) to clean dirty tools • B) to clean the under side of a vehicle. • C) to clean grease off of parts • D) you should not smoke around it.

  40. OXYACETYLENE TORCH • Some times called a smoke wrench. • Is used to cut, bend or weld metal parts together. • The torch is very useful for removing rusted metal parts.

  41. ARC WELDER • Is used to weld metal parts together. • It uses high electric current and the arc from the current to weld metal together. • You need to be trained in order to use this piece of equipment. • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE IT UNLESS YOU ARE PROPERLY TRAINED, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH COULD OCCUR IF YOU ARE NOT TRAINED!

  42. SOLDERING GUN, IRON • A soldering gun or iron is used to join two pieces of wire together a small electric current heats up the tip and causes the solder to melt into the wires.

  43. BATTERY CHARGERS • A battery charger is used to recharge a discharged battery. • It sends current through the battery. • The charger is connected to the battery. • The red lead from the charger is connected to the positive (+) side of the battery. • The black lead is connected to the negative (-) side of the battery.

  44. ********WARNING********** • DO NOT PLUG THE BATTERY CHARGER INTO THE WALL OUTLET BEFORE ITS CONNECTED TO THE BATTERY! • Discharged batteries produce hydrogen gas which is flammable and a spark could occur if the charger is plugged in before you connect it to the battery. • Which would cause an explosion!

  45. HOW TO CONNECT A CHARGER • Connect the positive (+) lead to the positive (+) terminal of the battery. • Next connect the negative(-) lead to the negative (-) terminal of the battery. • Plug the charger unit into the wall outlet. • Set the amperage to 12V low around 3 amps. • Finally set the timer to 30 minutes. • No longer than 30 min’s any longer will cause the battery to sulfate.

  47. DROP LIGHT • Provides a portable source of light. • Which can be taken to the work area. • Such as under a vehicle or under the hood.

CREEPER ROLL CART & FENDER COVERS. • A creeper is used when working on a vehicle supported by jack stands. • A roll cart is used for taking tools to a job away from your main tool box. • It also is useful for holding parts from the car you are working on. • Fender covers are used to protect the cars paint from damage while you are working on it.
