  1. EQ. What are the types of mining and the environmental impact of each type? What does an answer that meets the standard look like?

  2. What are the types of mining & the environmental impact of each type? • Surface and subsurface and they both mess up the environment really bad. • Coal, gold, silver and diamonds & other expensive stuff. Its not good for the environment. • We mine lots of minerals and it messes up the earth. • IDK .5 .5 .5 0

  3. What are the types of mining & the environmental impact of each type? • Subsurface mining – 50m+ below ground. Subsidence (surface holes caused by cave-ins) and underground fires, water contamination by acids & other minerals • Longwall: uses rotating shearer to remove minerals • Solution mining: injects hot water into ore and dissolves it • Surface mining – open pits, surface coal mining, solar evaporation, quarrying. Air, water & noise pollution. Erosion & soil damage. • Placer mining – surface mining of mineral deposits caused by wind and water: dredging along coastlines. Erosion 3

  4. What are the types of mining & the environmental impact of each type? • We mine (dig, drill) for metallic (electrical conductors, shiny), nonmetallic minerals (insulators, shiny or dull) & fossil fuels (coal, oil & natural gas). • Subsurface mining – 50m+ below ground. Subsidence (surface holes caused by cave-ins) and underground fires (coal), water contamination by sulfuric acid & other toxins & minerals • Longwall: uses rotating shearer to remove minerals (usually coal) • Solution mining: injects hot water into ore and dissolves it • Surface mining – open pits, surface coal mining, solar evaporation, quarrying. Air (dust, CO2), water contamination & noise pollution. Deforestation, erosion & acidified soil. • Placer mining – surface mining of mineral deposits caused by wind and water: dredging along coastlines. Erosion caused by destruction of vegetation and soil sedimentation. • Reclamation – the restoring of land to its original or better condition after mining is completed. 4
