  1. Kapil R. Dandekar, Ph.D. Drexel Wireless Systems Lab (DWSL) dandekar@ece.drexel.edu http://wireless.ece.drexel.edu June 14th, 2011 DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING NSF “Beyond Cognitive Radio” Workshop – Testbed Needs PHILADELPHIA, PA 19104

  2. Testbed Needs “Beyond” Cognitive Radio • Cognitive Radio: Biologically inspired algorithms for radios to sense and adapt to surroundings using various degrees of freedom (e.g., spectrum, antennas, modulation, coding, propagation medium) • Extend the flexibility of SDR/CR to include capabilities provided by new antenna technologies (often ignored in “traditional” cognitive approaches) B F A Metamaterial Transmission Line C D E Wearable and Flexible Antennas Metamaterial Substrate Transparent Antennas

  3. Testbed Needs “Beyond” Cognitive Radio • Support legacy protocols and new protocols within a single, scalable hardware /software architecture • Current testbeds predominantly limited to 802.11 speeds (ADC/DAC, processing limitations) • Hardware/software design is tough and has a high cost of entry • Need for “scalable” and flexible reference designs that allow for the rapid prototyping of various protocols (802.11, WiMAX, MB-UWB)within a common software architecture • Needs to be available to the community and online for remote access/experimentation • Modularity in design to support a wide range of carrier frequencies and take the “radio” out of SDR/CR when necessary • Reusable baseband with modular daughtercards (e.g., different radio frequencies, line of sight optical, free space optical, ultrasonic)
