  1. Welcome to 5th Grade Curriculum Night Mrs. Blackburn and Mrs. Trierweiler

  2. A Little About Mrs. Trierweiler • This is my 16thyear teaching, and my first year teaching 5th. • I live at home with my husband Walt, and I have 3 kids who are 23, 19 and 15. • I grew up in Islip, NY. I received my B.A. and Masters in Elementary Education from UF.

  3. A Little About Mrs. Blackburn • This is my 24th year teaching, and my first year teaching 5th. • I live with my husband and my sons who are 19 and 16. • I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and Naples. I received my degree in elementary education from USF.

  4. A Little About The “Treburns” • This is our 8thyear together. • We like this model of teaching because it allows the teacher to focus on two academic areas instead of several. • The team approach because it prepares the students for middle school. • The team model allows students to become more independent and responsible for bringing their materials to class. • Collaboration between teachers benefits the students.

  6. Newsletter: • Weekly email with newsletter. • It will include all the standards that will be covered the following week and a calendar of upcoming events.

  7. Weekly Behavior Chart • Students keep in their accordion folder at all times. • We will mark their chart to indicate the behavior or work/study skill that needed to be corrected during class. • 1 mark = S for the week in the corresponding category. • 2 + marks = N for the week in the corresponding category.

  8. Friday Folder: • Return Friday folder every Monday. • Initial that you looked at your child’s grades online and AR progress. • This form is used to generate behavior and work/study grades on the report card.

  9. Rewards • Bonus Bucks • “School Store” each 9 weeks • House Points

  10. House System Builds community among the classes and grade levels. This year it is school-wide. Studies show that house systems help build self esteem, a sense of belonging, and allow students to shine outside of the academic arena. The 6 houses are named after a variety of virtues. Students can earn house points by going above and beyond the normal expectations inside and outside of the classroom. House leaders are chosen based on a variety of criteria.

  12. Homework: • Reading – Spelling, AR, Comprehension • Math – Daily except for the evenings following quizzes and tests • Science – Pre-reading text for lessons. Study for quizzes and tests. • Social Studies – as needed • All homework is on the board for students to copy into their planners.

  13. Planner: • Our way of communicating with you • Please sign ONLY if your child completes his/her homework • Write a note if they didn’t and why (sick, out of town, refused, etc.) • Sign Monday – Thursday only

  14. Focus • Check grades each week. • No extra credit is offered. (school-wide policy) • Use your login information from last year. • Download the FOCUS App

  15. 2018-2019 Data • 86% of the Treburns were proficient (3 or above) in Reading and Math • iReady correctly predicted 75% of the math scores. • iReady correctly predicted 85% of the reading scores.

  16. iReady • Students use the class laptops for 45 minutes from 10:15 – 11:00 every day. • Students are working to make gains in the areas of Reading and Math. • Students work at their own pace. • Students are expected to complete 45 minutes in both reading and math weekly. • Students who miss this block due to special services will need to make up the time at home or come to our classrooms before or after school. Classroom time may be given to catch up on minutes. • We have found that students who do not complete their weekly minutes do not make as much growth on the FSA or in class.

  17. Go Math • Addresses Florida Math Standards (MAFS) • Go Math is the core curriculum. • In order to be successful in 5thgrade math, students should know their multiplication and division facts.

  18. GO MATH! Math Domains: • Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Order of Operations, Powers of Ten (Exponents) • Numbers and Operations Base Ten: Multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. • Number and Operations In Fractions: Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. • Measurement and Data: Conversions, line plots with fractions, volume • Geometry: Coordinates, graphing points, classifying 2d shapes by properties.

  19. Math Grades: • Chapter Tests 50% • Quizzes 30% • Classwork/Homework 20% • Children receive weekly homework grades based on completion of nightly homework.

  20. Test Corrections All students will have the opportunity to make test corrections on assessments and earn an additional classwork grade in reading and math.

  22. Science Grading Policy • 50% Projects/Assessments • 30% Quizzes • 20% Classwork/Homework

  23. ReadingWonders and Ready Reading • Address Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS) • Whole group and small group Instruction • Weekly or biweekly contract with a list of independent work to be completed by specified date. • Novel Studies

  24. Reading Grades: • Weekly Assessments / Projects 55% • Quizzes (spelling/grammar/vocabulary) 25% • Classwork/Homework 10% • Accelerated Reader Quiz Average 5% • Accelerated Reader Goal Percentage 5% • Homework is a participation grade. • Extra Credit is not available. (school-wide policy)

  25. How to Check AR Status: • Use the link that will be sent home August 30th • Set up your account to receive emails when your child takes a test and to monitor their progress towards their goal. • Listen to your child read 

  26. Accelerated Reader: • STAR Reading – Assessment that gives AR level • Students read books on their level and take AR tests to earn points. • Read every night. Even if your child met his/her goal. • Each student must meet a point goal and have an average of 85% to participate in AR party. • AR is 10% of the reading grade. • Students should alternate between fiction and non-fiction. • Students write their scores in the AR folder, and I sign them each day.

  27. Writing • Text Dependent: Students will read 3-5 texts and answer a prompt using evidence from the texts to support their answer. • Students are expected to write 4 paragraph essaysin response to a text dependent prompt.

  28. Social Studies • Assessments 80%, Classwork 20% • Celebrate Freedom Week • Constitution Day • Civics Education • Black History & Women’s History Months • US History and Geography

  29. Field Trips • February -Agrirama – Colonial Life Experience in Tifton, GA • May 20th – Sea World

  30. FSA Testing Windows • Reading, Writing, Science, and Math • April 1–14 Writing • May 4 – 15 Reading, Math, and Science • Paper/Pencil • Please do not schedule trips or morning appointments during that time.

  31. Reminders • Send earphones or earbuds • Label Accordion File Tabs (AR, Science, Social Studies, Reading, Math, Chart, and Homework) • Call the office for transportation changes. • Please do not clean out your child’s folders/accordion folder.

  33. Roberts Fall Festival What you need to know: • Family Time- We encourage all Roberts families to attend the event. Even if it is for a few hours. The children’s new classmates and their families will be there along with their teachers. • Fundraiser- One of largest fundraisers and the $$ supports technology upgrades and other classroom enhancements. • Volunteering- It is appreciated and strongly encouraged for every parent in the school to volunteer one 1-hour shift. Preferred slots go fast so SIGN-UP tonight!! Highschool children can also volunteer!! • Tickets-wristbands will go on sale closer to the event. The band can be used for all games and activities. $20 for 1 $30 for 2 $40 for 3 and $50 for 4 Children under 5 bracelet is $5 • Bring the whole family- We will have several dinner options for the entire family including a family pack with wristbands
