Hirahara) 10 MeV XEP inner belt outer belt HEP-e 1 MeV 100 keV MEP-i MEP-e ring current plasma sheet LEP-i LEP-e 1 keV 1 eV plasmasphere ion electron - ERG/ PPE measure widely differing energies over 6 orders with ion mass discrimination.

  6. Science Instruments of the ERG satellite : fields & waves PWE: Plasma Wave and Electric Field Experiment (PI: Y. Kasaba) MGF: Measurement of Geomagnetic Field (PI: A. Matsuoka) 100 kHz PWE PWE (search coil) 10 kHz Whistler (~kHz) 1 kHz magnetosonic wave (~100Hz) 1 Hz EMIC (~Hz) ULF waves (~mHz) MGF (fluxgate) 1mHz Magnetic Field Convective Field DC magnetic field electric field - ERG/ PWE and MGF measure electric and magnetic field for wide frequency range from DC to MHz.

  7. The ERG ground networks (PI: K. Shiokawa) ・Radar Network:SuperDARN network, FM-CW radar • Global convection pattern • ULF pulsation • Electric field penetration ・Magnetometer Network:MAGDAS/CPMN, Silk-Road, Antarctic Network, ULTIMA • Global magnetic field variation • Remote sensing of ring current • diagnostics of plasmasphere ・Optical Imager Network:Canada, Norway, Siberia, Antarctica • Estimation of ionospheric conductivity • Visualization of magnetospheric • plasma distribution

  8. The ERG simulation/integrated studies (PI: K. Seki) ・simulation/integrated studies Katoh and Omura [2007] global simulation of the radiation belts micro simulation Miyoshi et al. [2006] Comprehensive simulations including both micro wave-particle interaction and macro processes, which can be compared with the observations, are necessary for the ERG project. As one of the activity of the simulation/integrated studies, Nagoya University starts the new modeling/integrated study project : GEMSIS.

  9. Science Coordination Team/Project Science Center ・Science Coordination Team (Lead: Y. Miyoshi) • Planning and coordination of science program. • -Making an arrangement of the international collaborations. ・Project Science Center (Lead: K. Seki) • We are developing of a software package to analyze observations • and modeling based on IDL/TDAS. • Related observation database in commonly used format like CDF • will be implemented.

  10. International Collaboration: international fleet of geospace satellites Launch : 2012 US/THEMIS US/RBSP Launch : 2012 Canada/ORBITALS Launch : 2013 Japan/ERG

  11. International Collaboration: ground networks SuperDARN: world wide HF radar network convective electric fields/MHD pulsations8 new radars are developed in the sub-auroral latitude by 2012. ULTIMA: world wide consortium of magnetometer networks CARISMA: magnetometer elements of Canada THEMIS-GBO: systematic observations of ASI, magnetometers at auroral and sub-auroral latitudes.

  14. Framework of ERG-SC ERGScience Center ERG project Universities, Institute Universities, Institute ERG-modeling ERG-satellite ERG-ground ERG – Science Center (STELab, Nagoya univ.) Data Server Integrated Analysis Tool (TDAS) User ・The data of ERG-satellite will be archived in JAXA. ・The ERG-science center that archives all kind of project data is installed in STELab and develops the integrated analysis tool based on TDAS.

  15. Collaboration with other projects in Japan ERGScience Center ERG project Universities, Institute Universities, Institute ERG-modeling ERG-satellite ERG-ground ERG – Science Center (STELab, Nagoya univ.) • IUGONET is Inter-university project that • develops the meta-data server of related • ground-based data. • ERG-SC cooperates with the IUGONET to • develop CDF-format, data-analysis tool. • NICT has developed “OneSpaceNet” project • that maintains IT resources such as WS, data • server and networks for the study of geospace. • “OneSpaceNet” is one of candidates for • backbone of IT architecture for ERG-SC.

  16. Timeline ERGScience Center FY 2008. ・discussions with THEMIS, ORBITALS, RBSP, Resonance, KuaFu missions about the possible collaboration for development of data-analysis tool at the ISAS symposium. ・investigation of data analysis tools. The task-team has selected TDAS as a possible data analysis tool for the ERG-project. FY 2009. ・ Development of CDF as well as load procedures for gmag and HF radar has been started. ・ Agreement of cooperation with IUGONET, NICT, etc. ・ The ERG-science center has been selected for a institute project of STELab. FY 2010- (TBD) ・ We have a plan for development of both CDF and load procedures for ASI, VLF, riometer as well as simulation/modeling data for pre-launch effort. ・ Some of data will be opened for public after confirmations by PIs.
