Why Skill-related Fitness Is Important • Achieving good levels of skill-related fitness can help you perform in a variety of sports. • Each sport requires different combinations of fitness components. Training to improve these components is very specific. • Unless you are a highly trained athlete, it is not likely that you will achieve a high level in all skill-related components.

  4. Why Skill-related Fitness Is Important • Knowing your skill level can help you select a sport or lifetime activity best suited to your skills. • Remember: You can achieve a high level of physical fitness without being highly successful in skill-related fitness.

  5. Understanding the Skill-related Components • Coordination – the ability to use the senses to produce smooth and accurate movements. • Examples: golf, tennis, football, baseball & basketball

  6. Understanding the Skill-related Components • Agility – the ability to maintain control of the body while changing direction. • Examples: soccer, basketball & tennis

  7. Understanding the Skill-related Components • Speed – the ability to move quickly from one point to another. • Examples: sprinting in track, football, running bases

  8. Understanding the Skill-related Components • Power – the ability to combine strength and speed in a movement. • Examples: volleyball, football, jumping

  9. Understanding the Skill-related Components • Equilibrium (Balance) – the ability to maintain control of your body while stationary or moving. • Examples: skiing, skating, gymnastics

  10. Understanding the Skill-related Components • Reaction Time – the time required to start a movement after being alerted to the need to move. • Examples: track, swimming, baseball, soccer

Factors Determining Your Skill-related Fitness • Heredity • The skill-related components are influenced by heredity. • “Natural Athletes” – benefited from inherited characteristics • Other people seem to find a way to achieve in spite of natural ability through determination, desire and “heart”.

  12. Factors Determining Your Skill-related Fitness • Practice • Learning a skill takes practice. • Even if you are already polished at a skill, practice will lead to even greater success.

  13. Factors Determining Your Skill-related Fitness • Specific Training • The key to effective practice sessions is to work on specific skills. • In addition to performing the skill itself, your practice should include drills specific to the skill.

  14. Evaluating Skill-related Fitness • Coordination – Alternate hand wall toss • Agility – Zigzag run • Speed – 50 yard dash • Power – Standing long jump • Equilibrium (Balance) – One foot stand • Reaction Time – Yardstick test
